Often heard limp mode mentioned over the years but never experienced it - until now. (possibly) So twice now the car has lost power, EML comes on and then it sounds like it's running on 3 or possibly even 2 cylinders, a bit tractor like. Very little power, needed to change down to maintain any reasonable speed and keep the revs up to make progress. After switching the engine off and starting it again it all clears. No EML and no codes to indicate anything was wrong.

So is this known as limp mode?

Yep

Edit: NA though. And EML code present on mine (injector fault)

Yep

Man of few words :) thumbsup

So, on this occasion it happened a little while after the engine had konked out due (I think) loose shopping knocking the exposed relays in the boot. - Could that be the cause of limp mode a mile or so later?

If not, what?

The first time it happened was slightly different so I won't cloud the issue with that.

If you drive a turbo and go into limp mode its like driving an n/a 😉 Never really noticed massive performance hit on the n/a when ecu unhappy tbh DG

Mine went into limp mode once, the boost hose had come off (I/C to tophat) so may be worth checking that, you'll probably be able to hear it though.

TBH - just took it out for a 'spirited' drive around the dual carriageways and roundabouts of MK (spirited being perhaps an understatement) and it feels great. No limp mode at all this time.

Had a replacement ECU after recent 'dead engine' issues and equipped it with a MBR/TeamVX map and it has more oomph than before and the power delivery is sooo much better than the old Courtenay map.  Don't think a lardy V6 would stand a chance!

The only downside was the cost which means any replacement will be a while away yet!

Limp mode on my NA was horrible, max speed was not even 20mph, no amount of changing gear made the car go faster, it was just going so slowly :(
