Any tips on how to get one of these if you aren't actually in the trade. Looks like they are strict but who knows. PM me if needed ;)

No hope. Need to show some form of proof, like a pay slip etc.

You can get your place of work to get you signed up, so the company might need you to have one so all employees get one by showing a pay slip or company ID. Thats how I have mine. I need tools so qualify this way but the card works with no restrictions.

What Proof of Trade Do I Need?

Once you've applied for your Trade Card online and have receieved your confirmation email, you'll need to nip into your local store with photo ID as well as one or more forms of the following evidence to prove your membership of your trade:
•Payslip from employer
•Copy of City & Guilds or NVQ qualification
•College enrolment certificate

•Local phone directory entry

Eligible Trades

Trades that are eligible for a Halfords Trace Card are as follows:
Qualified mechanic
Self-employed mechanic
Mobile mechanic
Small independent garage mechanic
Fast Fit Centre mechanic
Commercial vehicle mechanic
Police, fire or ambulance mechanic
Bus mechanic
Local authority mechanic
Recovery mechanic
College motor vehicle staff
College apprentice mechanic
Army mechanic
RAF or aviation engineer

Naval Engineer
Marine Engineer/Mechanic
Carpenter
Electrician
Plumber
Glazier
Landscaper / Fencer
Welder / Metal worker
Utilities worker

So... can you go to Banana Print, pay £5 for a card saying "Finance Director, Barings Bank Self Employed Chief Mechanic"  and present that, along with your photo id and application, and Bob's your (mechanic) uncle...

Cool. 20% off, here I come!

It's not a tax thing, is it? I'd never advocate tax evasion/avoidance.

To be fair, even with a trade card the prices are still quite keen. I've got one but never use it as parts, tools, consumables are always cheaper elsewhere.

Yeah they are quite good, worth keeping an eye out when the offers are on, usually cheaper than with a trade card 👍

The saving grace of any tool which isnt great or breaks is you can change it for a new one really easily. The A level student serving you doesnt care so will swap it no questions, try that with the snap-on man! "did you service the ratchet with snap-on branded oil sir?".

Britool, Facon, Snap on and Mac are all great but they cost the earth and as already mentioned I've never had them replace a failed tool; ever. So good old Halfords are just down the road and I can put an obscene knuckle bar on their sockets and if they fail great I'll go get a shiny new one. As it goes the only think of theirs I've had fail a few times is their star/torq drives, they are a little brittle. Never deform, just shatter in some considerable style.
