bought a second hand set of gaz coilovers. there is corrosion on the springs and a bit on the struts themselves.

anyone repainted these? do the springs come apart from the struts without much hassle?

cheers

If they're anything like the Nitrons (which I believe they are), you should be able to release the springs easily. I would get the springs sand blasted and powder coated. As per the struts, I'd leave as is and simply clean and grease up.

Just did my Bilstiens, easy to remove, one of the few easy jobs on a VX, compress the springs using motor cycle Spring compressors, be careful, as if they let loose suddenly they can be very dangerous. I blasted my so rings, then oxide under intend, then 2 top coats, I just rubbed down the shocks and then the same treatment. Again careful compressing the springs getting them back on.

New springs are at least £25 and helpers are £30. Surely much cheaper to have them powder coated...

Cheers for the feedback..had time to look at them today and the larger ones of the four the spring removed easily! The smaller may need some sort of spring compression i think just to get the top cap off. Springs aint too bad so may just give them a rub over and a freshen up As for the struts id read somewhere rhat leaving them in coke is good at removing surface rust on the threads. Im tempted to give the top and bottom of the struts a bit of a mask and paint to tidy it over Andy that looks great what youve done there. In time id like to do that to my wishbones etc but

The other thing not mentioned is that springs age and eventually fracture.

right thought id follow this up with an end result!

attacked the top and bottom of coilover units with black plastikote, the myth you read online that coke cleans all the rust away is bollocks, made no difference. i was initially tempted to do it all including the threads but decided against except for the lower part of the larger one which you could see had took a bit of weathering below the adjuster

springs i tried with the same paint at first, the result was better than current state but you could see visable marks of the rusting underneath

i found a local powder coaters who did the springs for £40. results are perfect and like new

just need to get them fitted now!!

That's very true. Just replaced springs and struts on the shed and I was surprised how much the old ones had compressed and how much stiffer the new OEM ones are. If I'd realized that I would have put new springs on the new billies rather than refurbishing them.
