Should we DECAT not decaf..can't edit title..Anyway this cat ..It keeps coming in. A large black cat that's dark brown but looks black. And it's not ours although it likes cat biscuits, lots of them. It just wants to come in and sleep all day. My gf really likes it and she thinks it's chipped ( not chipped as in cars) and has an owner, somewhere. Seems cruel to turn it away but we don't wanna be charged with cat-napping. Any cat people out there? Any advice. Should we decat as apposed to decaf?

How is it cruel to turn it away? Just ignore the thing, its got fcuk all to do with you. You've already done more harm than good by encouraging it, why wouldn't it want to hang around if you pander to it and hand out more treats than what it would get from home?

Wait until it coughs up a fur ball in the bed (the cat, not the gf) then you'll want rid

They say cats pick their owners. We've ended up taking 2 strays in. Both not chipped and no owners found.

If the cat was happy at home it wouldn't be looking elsewhere. Things like kids and new babies can upset them, and other things.

Could even be the owner is not looking after it properly, or even that it has a perfectly good home, and just likes to wander and find other humans to befriend and the owner is unaware of what its upto.  It could even be lost?

If its doing no harm and you don't mind it being there, why not just carry on as you are? You're honored that it has chosen you both :P :)

If you find the cat is spending more and more time with you, or looks like its not looked after elsewhere then take it the vets and get it scanned for a chip?

From my experience cats only wander away if they have a noisey house or dont get fed. Or if they are fat and greedy and end up with multiple homes

Cats only stay where the menu is better. If you want it to FO then top feeding it. If you want it to stay then feed it more.

I used to have three cats and one of them loved the company of people, and being the 'queen' cat. While I was out at work she'd spend the day round at my retired neighbours and I didn't mind at all. She was very well treated by me, well fed and there were no kids in the house, she just liked some human company and some distance from the other cats (her brother and sister).

It's done that one already. (Mind, if it did that on my car, then it would be booted, straightaway. Lol. ) It's been fed, put out, and it's come back again. So it's locked in again tonight. We'll see how things go, quite happy to feed it if someone else is prepared to pay all the vets bills.

Got the same issue here. Neighbours (black) cat comes in every night when I get home from work. Now even recognises the sound of my car pulling onto the drive. It gets a few treats and then sleeps on the sofa next to me until I got to bed when it voluntarily goes out. I'm not really a cat person but he is company (called him Buddy ) and I've no responsibility or guilt when I go away. And its thrown up twice on my expensive and authentic silk road rug!

I took my cat to the vet when it inexpicably started loosing weight despite being fed more. Vet did some tests then asked if anyone in my neighbourhood had moved out. There was an old retired couple that lived opposite and it turns out my cat had trotted over to their house as soon as I left for work and spent all day there until I returned. I have no problem with that at all, as far as I see it the cat and neighbours were both getting some companionship from it and they were sharing in the cats food bills (there was even a load of cat food left in their garage when they moved out even though they didn't have a cat)

We do get a lot of cats that come in to work overweight. Often turns out it's being fed at a neighbours too. Best not to feed it as it can be hard for owners to keep control of their pets weight, and often they are in special diets for their health.

Actually, we have a regular visitor from our neighbours, and I know she's very well fed!

if you have cats and the cat is coming in through the cat flap, get a chip scan flap thing where it only lets your cats in, i have one and it works great.

my boy cat (stanley) used to go round next door when i lived at my old house and sit with the old lady for hours, then when i got home he would saunter on back..
