Hi all, new member of forum from Newcastle here.. long term petrol head / victim

currently own a Corvette C5 project car.. coming to an end.. but keeping it as too much invested in it now to part with it.. and it looks and sounds badass lol!

I was going to switchout the gearbox to a manual, and then maybe supercharge it... but realistically this is big money and really not worth it, not huge support network for doing tuning etc etc..

Been lurking and reading on here, always liked the Vx cars for years..

I want something for use to get a fix of fun on twisty's and even track days.. will never track the vette..

I love the VX as an option for that..

Idea would be to get a cheapish version and use it on limited mileage for a bit of a motorbike substitute as I have been banned from those now :-)

like the idea of driving to a track, going round for a few laps and riving home..

sorry for questions you may have seen before.. but essentially I'm looking at probably next year ( but who knows!!)

checklist would be :

> Turbo?  ( seems best fun option and comes as factory so should be reliable, however Supercharger does intrigue me a lot!

> I don't mind cat D as long as this is not structural issues, it seems to not put you guys off?

seen cat c ! should I be afraid of that.. theres a cheap cat c up here from TVRGlen who doesn't seem to have fans on here!  so maybe cheap for a reason.. also an NA version

I'm hoping not to go mad on mods ( can't promise!) got that t shirt with the vette..

so some questions

> recommend Turbo over NA ( assume bit of a premium but prices are all over due to peoples mods! ) but extra 50hp and delivery worth bit extra..

> what are typical running costs per year for you? ( I'm planning Garaged / Limited miles )

> any ongoing issues to be aware of?

> I guess its a Vauxhall so parts / prices are OK?

>do you track yours, how much to attend a track day? ( I'm hoping Croft does them)

do you need to mod car for track use? ( harness etc or not a requirement)

any members in and around the North East?  with Turbo or SC cars? I have never been in one, be good to see one close up.. my friend has an Elise that was great fun..

thanks all

Dave

A cat D is fine, but factor it into the cost. You're buying for less and it will be worth less when you sell it so do you really care ?
May put some future buyers off.

TVRGlen does not have a great reputation on here. Do a search. Personally I wouldn't risk it.

As a rule the more power you chase the more issues you'll have. Stage 2 turbo or SC have both proven to be very reliable.

The turbo vs na vs sc debate is endless. Have a go in both and see which you prefer.
The NA always has the option to go SC and the SC is generally regarded as having the edge on track due to slightly less weight and you can put the power down earlier.

Running costs : assuming say 6 trackdays a year, as a minimum you'll have annual costs of :
service - plugs, oil and brake fluid (£250)
a set of tyres (£550)
half wear on a set of pads (£125)
quarter wear on set of discs (£70)

Other items may need doing as a one off. Depends on the age of the car and whether kept outside / used in winter etc. Radiator replace, suspension refresh etc are common.
Bodywork often suffers from cracking and bubbling in outdoor cars.

Really also need uprated toe links, hub carrier bolts and gearbox breather for track use as a minimum. Ideally also uprated anto roll bar and dampers.

> I guess its a Vauxhall so parts / prices are OK?

*Cough*...no. Mechanicals and consumables are reasonable. Any bodywork stuff is horrendous. Clams and lights in particular. So don't crash!

Track days range in price from about £100 for UK circuit/evening, £200 for full day or £250 for a euro circuit.
The most commonly used track day organisers by VXers are Javelin & Lotus On Track.
some insurers include track day cover as part of your road insurance.

Car is tough enough to be driven half way across europe, thrashed on a trackday or 2 and then driven home.
