"The third cylinder is sadly losing some compression which I’m told is common for these engines at this mileage. The car still runs fine and is driven daily with no issues; however, the engine will need to be rebuilt or replaced at some point in the future. Thankfully these engines can be found in the Astra VXR and GSI so supply is plentiful and new engines can be found for as little as £500. After this has been sorted you will have an utterly reliable car and complete peace of mind".

 

​Losing some compression is not common on these engines at this mileage, it happens and it happens at much less mileage and much more mileage so, no, its not common at this mileage. You cant buy a decent, known to be good engine for £500 and even if you could it wont cost just £500, engines don't fit themselves nor can you get it rebuilt for £500 After it has been sorted you probably wont have a reliable car and complete peace of mind because you'll have to find out why that cylinder went down prematurely (see above for that) and make sure it doesn't happen again.

To clear things up a bit as there are a couple of random comments being made here. I bought the car, spent good money on it to get it running right and then sold it to buy myself an Evo X which was completely genuine as I need ISOFIX points to take my one year old out with me to cat meets.

The new owner has now put it up for sale, when I owned it I didn't know there were any issues with cyclinder 3 the only thing that ever happened to me was that water got into the coil pack and has to change it. Ran fine when I had it and I even daily drove it for a good few months doing 1000 miles per week with no real problems. The new owners has been unlucky with this issue arising under his ownership. I had the car with MMG, top gear in wolves and C1-R under my ownership and they never picked up anything more major then a sticky turbo actuator which(I knew about this when I bought the car hence the lower price when up for sale) I subsequently also changed the turbo just on case on the advice of MMG. I can't comment on current condition but when I sold it the car was running nicely and there was not any issues that I knew about at point of sale.

Sidenote the stage 4 map was Courtney and then I got MMG to map it when I bought it. So the MMG map cant have been the cause unless the map can damage the engine within months.

Supposed to be 1000 miles per month in my previous post not per week! Although one week I did click up 600 miles if I remember correctly.

Surprised a map could have had that much impact so quickly. Either way there was a genuine reason for my sale and just seems like the new owner has got unlucky with this issue coming up. I do agree thoigh without the issue being sorted he may not get the money he is after.

Hi there,

Just for clarity, when this car came to MMG under Harmy’s ownership, the car would boost like crazy, light up the rears and then drop into limp mode. It was dangerous to drive and was running far too much boost pressure.

Upon inspection, we discovered the turbine and compressor blades to be severely damaged along with the the recirc valve. Under MMG’s advice, Harmy had a new Turbo fitted and we remapped it with a far more sensible boost pressure. This transformed the car IMO.

As it happens, a new owner has now brought the car to us and it’s in the workshop. It needs further work in other areas but out of common courtesy, I can’t provide any further info.

Liam never comes on here so won’t even know this thread exists but to see someone slam MMG for a failed engine is completely incorrect. We’ll never attempt to damage the reputation of our competitors either but I’m happy to defend MMG’s reputation in this case.

Hope you don’t mind my input Harmy and hope you’re enjoying your Evo. Feel free to stop by for a coffee if you’re ever in the area. Would be nice to have a nosey at your new car.
