Selected reverse at ~ 60mph  :o

Here's the story:

Off to work one sunny morning, throttle response goes.

Intermittent response to restarting car.

Crawl back home, swap for e90 330i

Weekend job

Torque app says: P0100

That's helpful!! thumbsup  MAF

Quick search on here says; disconnected MAF and see if car happier.

It definitely is

New one it is then.

You've got a VXT, could be worse

A lot worse!!

Alas, not in stock at Eurocar Parts

I'll just clean MAF connect with electrical contact cleaner (can't get sensor out, screws shot) before I reconnect anyway, nothing to loose.

There's surprise!!

We now seem to be back to normal :groupjump: .

Only one way to find out; go for a quick throttle flooring blast

All good.

Now then, this is where the e90 330i rears it's head again.

In one of those, after a quick flooring in 3rd, I often shift straight to 6th.

Which is where?

And what's in that position in a VXT?  :o

Just caught myself  :beat:

So:

- should I have been able to select reverse?

- clutch up, would I have trashed the gearbox?

If you had hooked reverse at 60mph and you're still alive then you're lucky. I doubt you could though mate.

I didn't let the clutch out, so I know nothing new happened.

But I thought normal gearboxes wouldn't even let you move the gear lever into reverse at that speed; hence my original questions

My 500 will let you at reverse while moving forwards. If there is no gate to stop you (and that's in the box btw) then you just have to not be a loon that's all.

I would be very surprised if you were actually in reverse. Try going from first to reverse at mearly walking pace and you'll see what I mean. I'm by no means an expert and perhaps someone will be along soon with a technical explanation. I can see how if you had a daily driver with a six speed box you might go for another gear though. Glad nothing went bang though buddy.

Having recently had my gear box apart I can tell you how the gate works. There is a safety gate to stop you selecting reverse directly from 5th only. Mechanically there is nothing to stop you selecting it from any other gear at any speed. As mentioned I doubt you actually engaged the gear, you probably just ground the tips of the teeth together. Not ideal but not the end of the world. Take the car for a test drive, if all is well I would suggest changing the gear box oil. Relatively simple job.

"Mechanically there is nothing to stop you selecting it from any other gear at any speed." i.e. I was previously misinformed.

" Relatively simple job." are you sure you own a VX?

Lots of potentially simple jobs yeah, but the words; VX220, simple & job, in the same phrase?

I had the gear box out to fit a new diff, so from my point of view it's a simple job ;)

Under tray off, remove gear box fill plug, then remove drain plug. They were seriously tight on my car. Fill with 2.25 Lt of GM gear box oil of I remember the capacity correctly, do check. Do you have a breather mod or not?

D, I don't doubt you at all. And different planet to trying to tell a BMW e90 to recognize the disc changer connection it already has!!  :ffs:

It's the time (for when things won't come off, or break, or your Vauxhall dealer has no idea what you're talking about) & space (to get under the car, and get my massive fingers into the tiny crevasses) that I just am chronically short of.

Goes on my list of things to do.

No breather mod.
