Hi fellow VXers,

I just wanted to get your opinion on a scenario and upgrade.

As many of you know from my recent threads, I have just supercharged the car. I went to Snetterton yesterday to give it a good shake down on track.

Issue 1 - Fuel Pump

The car made it to lunch then the fuel pump died she just conked out dead on circuit! (99.9% sure car won't even prime now) massive thank you to Jez for helping me diagnose.

So first step is a new fuel pump this looks like a good option to me does anyone have experience of this pump? http://www.spitfireengineering.com/elise-s2-fuel-pumps/

Issue 2 - Car getting hot

It was quite a muggy day 22 degrees and after 3 or so laps the car was getting hot max I saw was 104. I would then let the car cool down which took quite a long time. The car is running Pro Alloy triple pass rads charge coolers etc, so my understanding is that it should stay cool? Charge cooler was working as it should etc...

Do you think a weak fuel pump might be contributing to why the temps were steadily rising?

Elliot

i dont think 104 is to bad tbh, but the fuel pump could of been causing extra heat if the car was running lean, spitfire pump or the walbro 255 cheaper option is more than up to the job of a stage 2 sc but can be a little noisy at time

A common issue I have seen when tinkering is people wire the fans the wrong way round so you build up to 105 or lower if changed on the Dutchy and then the fans push against the flow of air resulting in the temp creeping up..... it will go down slowly if you pull up to a stop.

I constantly monitor my intake temp on track. With my M62 i never got over 75 on a hot day.

With my harrop i reach 95 on a hot day max.

Only when my charge cooler system was not working, i got over 100 (up to 110 iirc)

Thanks JB checked that one and fans are blowing in the right direction :)

Thanks Smiley,

I am referring to engine temperature above, I wasn't monitoring my inlet temps as I don't know how :)

Are you talking about engine water temps or IAT

2 very different things

If you have a tmap fitted, you can use an android Phone, torque and a 10 pound bluetooth dongle to read it out.

If you play in high-res you can see my phone.

Top = inlet temp, middle is water temp, bottom is inlet pressure

The phone pulls it all from the ecu via the dongle.

I have put warmings on them via the torque app. Over 100 inlet temp, and i know something is wrong with my SC cooling system.

Over 110 water temp, and i know something is wrong with my normal cooling system.

Over 1.3 bar inlet pressure, and i know something is probably wrong with my exhaust system.

Engine water temps Chilli they are the only ones I can monitor on my dash... I don't have scan gauge etc

i think everyone would like the water temps to be cooler, but in reality you going to see them over 100 degrees on track

Ahh okay so its normal for them to run hot  :) just felt like it was creeping hotter and hotter do they tend to level out or just keep climbing?

Perhaps there is a chance the fuel pump was making it run lean - Thanks Chilli is it normal for this to happen after 3 laps?

Or do they usually take longer?

I get the feeling the Z22 water jacket + pump effectiveness doesn't lend itself to all the extra heat in general. I think most of the SC'ed Z22's suffer like this from what I've read on here, not that it seems a problem in reality.

Thanks Smiley that's very interesting indeed.

Can rule out the exhaust as its a 2.5 tullett de cat :). Interesting that over 110 is a problem, where does yours usually level out?

I believe i peak at 107isch on water temp on hot days.

The stack goes all the way up to 130 i can tell you from experience.

From there, it lights up like a Christmas tree. (and the gasket/head is probably fooked by then)

Since my new engine, i run the monitoring stuff to prevent it from happening again. Luckely, as it caught an electrical problem with my SC cooling, preventing me to fook my brand new B207.

It dosent go over 100 now But this came down with the b207 Gen 2 block ( with bigger water jacket ) And sits at 83 on a motorway steady journey instead of the normal 91 ish of the z22se I'm also running a bit more power than standard stage2

Re the pump - I have the Spitfire pump. It works perfectly although the claim that it prevents fuel starvation on long left handers has not proven true, at least for me anyway. I never get coolant temps over 100 deg on track. I believe this may be because I don't have a big charge cooler up front and so air can pass freely over the rad but I could be wrong. I did see it creep up over 100 at Le Luc last summer but it was 40deg in the shade! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Water injection helps to keep everything cooler including exhaust so wadding lasts longer iat and engine combustion temps
