Has anyone managed to fit lotus probax seats without the head rest being in the way?

My hoops are cut away, but my seats in the previous owners car looks ok.

Probax is just the padding. Usually applied to Lotus Motorsport seats (like in our vxr)

Yeah if fitting the above seats you don't have to touch the headrests

Thank you, how about these seats? They look different. Look at this on eBay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/172816679401

Normal seat with the probax padding indeed. You sure you would want to spend 1k on padding?

I don't care about probax, I just want a seat thats mainly cloth, comfortable and looks like new. I find my seats very comfortable now I put padding behind them, just struggling to find someone decent to trim them. They're either very busy or don't sound interested.

Gotcha now. So the question is if s2/s3 seats fit our hoops in general, and/or if runner modding is needed.

Pete did have height issues, so I guess they will need the headrest modifying like mine. However I had Dave the Trimmer modify them so I didn't bash my head every time I got in the car.

Yes I struggled with the normal seat in the vx frame. If you use and Elise frame you maybe ok not sure. In the end I took the pads off, and when I get around to it will put some cardboard stringed with suede thin ones in instead (if I don't cut the metal frame off first) I'll dig out a pic later to show you.

You can see here that the probax headrests are a little tall in the vx frames. I fitted a harness seat from a
Type72 also and that was the same.

Remove or at least thin down the headrest and you'll be fine though.

You could try to recline the seat frame by packing the front up with a washer, but I'm not sure if it would work in terms of keeping the frame solid, and it may not be safe. Just rip the headrests out ;)

Thanks for your help pete-r, I think I will persevere with trying to get mine refurbished if new seats will cause me more of a headache.

It's easy in terms of removing the old headrests, they just break off they are like two sides of fire retardant foam glued together.

Only downside is it looks a bit crap when removed .........

but with your skills in leatherwork I'm sure you could tidy it up nicely.

Thank you :) although I have very little skills, just patience and I can't do anything that requires a sewing machine as I don't have one.

If and when I next take the seats out I think I'll cut the metal off behind the seats (they do absolutely sweet f.a. other than block the edges of the rear view and add weight up high) and put some oem style rubber U trim on the fibreglass to tidy up the edges.

Good call, I took it for a drive today, thing is I know I can do all day in the car and still be comfortable in my current seats so it's probably worth looking after them. Didn't know seat trimming was such a dying art of work with long waiting lists.

Not to mention the cost :o perhaps I should buy an industrial sewing machine and do it.
