With more and more information about the oil burning in f1 being used to boost performance, cooling, using additives etc is this not against the rules as they stand before they have started reducing the amount of oil usage aloud ?? 

 

yes i am sitting here not watching qualifying happen because there not aloud to have a wet setup change when it rains

More the case that it's not illegal to burn oil, in fact most racing engines have always been designed to use much more oil than your ordinary family car but nobody thought that it might be possible to exploit that characteristic to increase output thus oil consumption has never been regulated.  If it is now becoming used in that way then no doubt the FIA will soon introduce rules to prevent an advantage being gained by using additives in the oil which boost power.  There have been similar issues in the past concerning moveable aerodynamic aids, petrol, both the chemical makeup and the temperature / density and in many other areas, remember the Brabham Fan Car.  The ongoing battle between the most imaginative engineers and the rule makers is one of the things that makes F1 so fascinating!

Uh. Burning oil really isn't an advantage in itself. The oil is too high in molecular weight to be a fuel boost, it'll burn too slowly. The advantage is likely down to the super low piston ring tension which will incidentally result in higher oil consumption.

 

And no, rules aren't being broken. There was a deadline to introduce high oil consumption engines (Spa) which Mercedes met. It takes a long time to specify new piston rings and validate oil consumption, hence the need to establish a deadline.

From what I understand it's more about the other additives there putting in the oil And they were beloved to be burning in excess of 5 litres over a race, this has now been significantly been reduced, and they were also bringing the oil in from the turbo through the inlet valves and even possibly separating the oil from the additives Don't get me wrong very clever stuff but was it fair correct ? Ferrari at some point even had a additional " oil " tank I also have seen one idea that the movement of the gudgeon pin was allowing oil to pass through the piston rather than around it

If i read correctly the norm should be 0.9 liters of oil per 100 km versus the 1.2 liters they currently burn.

Yes will be reducing to 0.6 for next year

My VX must be F1 inspired then, the amount of oil it burns :P
