You can use 18" wheels if you want - just get lower profile tyres to keep the same rolling radius, and don't get cheapo heavy efforts.. 

 

It might ride a bit more harshly (due to the tyre profile, but still prob better then racing driver wannabee 'semi-slicks')

Does anyone no what ET Offset you can have on the VXT before you would have to put on spacers... I no ATS DTC say there 17" wheels are a straight fit with these ET offset front 20 rear 30 ... But any help in this area would be good as I'm pushing more towards Team Dynamics pro race 1.2 18" which says that there 18x8 has an ET offset of 35. :-)
