This is the 2nd time the car wouldnt randomly start. Replaced camshaft sensor after the first time it failed to start about 3 months ago, when i ran the diagnostics through it. Same issue starting again, taken it apart today to see if anything is loose, came up again as camshaft sensor. Any reason why the part would have failed so quickly. Bought the part from autovaux. My engine mounts need replacing so i thought the sensor may have shaken loose. Thanks

the engine wiring loom could have a broken wire or a bad terminal at the connection plug

on the turbo the cs plug is quite prone to collect water , but it is an electrically simple device , where as the wiring loom is now getting old.

if the cs is unplugged then it should start with a wasted spark and wasted fuel injection , so if you had camshaft timing wrong out by a tooth/two this would get it to start.

but you would notice reduced revs

check the single bolt and threadlock it

There is fuel squirting through the rail when you press that tyre valve thingy. I have no diagnostic codes being thrown up since i changed the sensor for a 2nd time. Unplug battery and take fuses out?

The cam sensor is held on with a rather flakey single bolt that holds the sensor bracket with a fair degree of movement/alignment. Be sure that it is located as close to the moving parts as possible, so that it can pick up the pulse. It might be that NVH is loosening and pulling the sensor away from the cams.

might also be worth checking the crank sensor, as they have been known to play up on the z20le* engines

Replaced the crank sensor as well not long ago. The first replacement of the camshaft sensor resolved the original starting issue. As far as i can see, the sensor can only go on one way. There is a small hole that fits between the forks almost like an alignment guide. Whats the NVH Nev??

Probably. The missing bolt holds the rear cambelt cover to the block. So must have been shaking the cooper wiring inside the sensor to bits. The original bolt must have come out after a trackday somehow, as i never saw it after the first time i replaced the sensor. Never mind, shall try again. Thanks again for your help peeps

but the camshaft sensor will not stop the engine running or starting

Seemingly it does. I can't imagine the ECU being too happy about not knowing what position the cams are as this is surely used to trigger the spark...

A camshaft sensor going will normally allow the engine to carry on running. You would struggle to restart when stopped though.
