For the first time in 7 years of ownership my VXT is cranking but not starting Noticed that I cant hear the fuel pump with the ignition on - and I would expect to. Can anyone remember - do you normally hear the pump before you crank?

go to the boot , find the concealed black cover for the fuses and relays ,

try swapping around the grey relays , and yellow fuses

The fuel pump fuse is the second yellow 20A one.

fuel pump relay should be grey, check the wiring, it has a big and small gauge wire both White with a purple chaser. none of the other relays have that wire colour.

No progress - all the fuses are ok. The end relay (nearest the rear end of the car) was actually out of its socket but replacing it made no difference. Tried swapping the grey relays over - no change.

Make sure the cut off switch hasnt tripped. Its next to the gearbox on the inside of the subframe pax side, press the top down and listen/feel for a click. Also, to check fuel is priming unscrew that black cap on the fuel rail and release all pressurex try starting the car again a couple times and check the valve to make sure there is more fuel spurting out .

Have you got a spare key and fob to try?

I have had same symptoms, twice this year

mine was the big yellow relay in the boot - I removed it, cleaned the terminals with wire wool, then sprayed with electrical contact cleaner - refitted, tried to start car and vroom vroom

Happy days

and to answer the second part of your OP,  yes, you turn the key, you normally hear the pump prime and then push the start button, and into life (normally)

If immobilised, you should have a constant red led on the speedo display, when trying to start  (mine did) I suspected immob issue when my yellow relay started playing up

The yellow relay is the starter relay, so if its turning over the that should be OK.

Short across the fuel pump relay and see if the pump goes.

Check the loom of doom, as well as the actual connectors being shitty I've seen broken wires there too.

Where abouts are you?

Loom of down at the connectors behind the header tank. I had the same symptoms and Zoobeef traced it to a corroded wire near one of the connectors.

Im in hospital with my youngest daughter so not able to get stuck into the car. Local Vauxhall specialists have had a quick look- no diagnostics coming from ECU and suspect no power to ECU.

A break or bad connection between fuse 8 and the ecu then. That's what Wolfie's was.

I'm assuming that's the ECU at the back of the engine bay on the let hand side, fixed to the bulkhead.

In which case the casing is definitely earthed
