This was way back; direct comparison of my stock 2.0 LSJ engine (3.1 pulley + vxt muffler) against Smileys Stage 2 Z22. This is wheel power (and had a totally untuned bottom end), but you see the difference in peak torque rpm:

Jeeeze, that graph speaks volumes. You can really see the advantage of SCing at low/mid RPM especially.

Pictures with fitted SAAB oil-cooer in the car would be nice.  :) I have not decided if I will go that way as well. Curious on how narrow it will be.

I'll get pics of my solution, but I discovered the thermostat housing on my Saab engine interferes with the gear selector cable mounting bracket, meaning it would need a section cut out and re-welded to fit, so I've taken a different approach to reusing my existing Z22SE housing, and modifying to take the Saab oil cooler hoses.

Using that's is standard on b207 with Saab oil cooler

What do you mean - using the Z22SE housing is normal?

Cool. I'm just going to get a couple of 19mm hose connections put in the top of the thermostat housing. Presume you must have done the same.

i cant remember the exact sizes and what i bought now but basically modded all the water pipes down to the solid pipe (low down ) all the way up to the cooler/stat housing

this i cut the original hoses and added a 180 bend and 45 degree bend to make it all fit, but like i said cant remember exactly what i bought to do it

In case you're not using the Z22SE oil cooler, beware that one side of that cooler is 35 mm and the other 32 mm. Found that out last weekend when I tried to fit my new oil cooler with 35 mm hose ends on both sides. The 35 mm end didn't want to go on the 32 mm hose. And not for the lack of trying. So best strategy is to plan how you're going to run the hoses and measure before you buy. Just thinking about it, anything against just leaving the old oil cooler there? As some kind of oversized hose adapter.

On B207 conversions it's standard to swap the complete Z22SE thermostat housing, due to the heater hose routing. But you can use other thermostat lids for your custom oil cooler.

(Speaking of that, why not use the heater circuit (return) for the oil cooler?)

Yep, I used the Z22SE thermostat set up on my previous 2.4 engine (the Saab oil cooler couldn't be used as the 2.4 block didn't have the ports, just like a Z22SE). I did wonder about looping in the heater circuit, but that is post-thermostat (or is it pre - can't remember flow direction!) and I suppose you want the oil temps up initially, hence in place before the thermostat opens.. Alex - good info. I could keep the laminova in there, but its just an ungainly 3kg-odd lump I'd rather remove..

Ungainly, yes. And at a measured 1 kg, it is heavy for a hose adapter. Laminova it is most certainly not. Once I have the right fitting, I will put a Laminova cooler in place. It fits nicely in the same space as the ungainly overweight hose adapter

Yeah I'm thinking of the Elise version you get that's a laminova.. 1kg is un-noticable, but I just don't like redundant stuff kicking around..!

Ditto, next time I need to take my rear clam off I'm determined to have the balls to eliminate the fuel vapour system. It's been quietly irritating me for 8 years at least!

The heater circuit is always open, as it bypasses the thermostat. In fact the return flows over the back of the thermostat spring to open it when the temps get higher.

Yeah that's what I mean though - I presume you don't want the oil cooler being 'operational' initially (i.e. with coolant flow through it) as it would increase the time the engine oil takes to get up to temperature. Whether or not this makes a difference in the real world, not sure!

The (heater) water gets warm earlier than the oil, so you will be pre-heating the oil on a cold start. For cooling; the heater water runs probably a bit hotter than the radiator return flow, but if that makes any difference for the 120-130*C oil temps?

But no idea on the water flow capacity of the oil cooler.Could be a restriction if plumbed in series with the heater circuit...

Agreed. Although I'm going to apply the "keep it simple, stupid" to this, and as I am with the rest of the engine swap..

So I'm going to try looping the oil cooler into the heater circuit and see how that pans out..
