I'm taking the stereo out of the VX soon (as I need it in my Scooby, and I can't hear it at speeds above 30mph anyway!), and I'm sure that I saw someone had turned the 'orifice' left by the stereo into a 'glove box' (with non-slip matting etc.) of sorts.

Have I made that up, or does anyone else remember that and, if so, who it was that did it?

That'd be me. I bought a 1msq non slip mat in my local pound shop and cut to size I bought a tray with plastic tongues on the sides which snaps into the metal dash panel cutout.

Nice one Pete. I've just ordered the bit of kit that Joe linked to, so I hope it does the job!

Added benefit is being able to drill into it and run USB cables for charging my phone while it's in there.

No sweat. I think that one secures from the side so worst case put screws in the side to brace it. I like that one though mine has no door. The radio is a joke once your moving, and the face plate it's another thing to think about when parking etc. It's a win win. Next time my seats come out the speakers will follow...

I bought an Ebay cup holder - was total crap.  Seller refunded me and told me to bin the item!  I'm now using a VW cup holder
