Just bought new set of brake pads for the rear of my shed (Ford Focus TDCi), just £18 including VAT + delivery, so cheap it was a pleasure to click the "Pay Now" button.

Makes you realise how much we get robbed for equivalent VX220 items.

Hmmm, as my M135i was nicked at the weekend, I'm already onto looking at 'second' cars...

Was contemplating something a bit cheaper and older (live on my own, only 2.5 miles to work, sometime walk).

Requirements (ish):

  • Hatchback (so I can fit my paramotor in)
  • Ideally ~40mpg on the motorway
  • Something with a bit of torque
  • Reliable-ish
  • Not plastered in stick-on fake go-faster spoilers or big stupid wheels

Was thinking a Golf GTi Mk5, or similar Seat Leon. Mini Cooper S (mk2 1.6 Turbo?) looks reasonable value, although some interesting specifications, and not in a good way. Smaller loading space than a Golf I would assume, so maybe a no-go'er. Trying to stay away from desiesels.

I quite fancy a mk5 golf gti. They seem like good value at current prices - well built, still look modern, subtle enough to park in most places and the interior looks ok too. For some reason I just cant get excited about the seats. Never liked the styling and dont think its ages as well as the golf.

Yeah I've always liked the fairly restrained looks of the Golf. Cooper S is also a contender with most of the chrome crap removed / changed.. Boot may struggle for my paramotor though..

My BMW 130i is likely to be up for sale soon. Doesn't meet 40mpg requirement but the straight six sounds fantastic.

Oh and sorry to hear about your car. Hopefully it hasn't been too stressful for you.

Looked at a 130i, and although appealing (mainly due to the powertrain), not sure how I'd feel about it after the M135i.. Plus they are fairly rare / uncommon, and I'm quite picky on spec.

Not been too stressful (apart from everything that goes with it), as my VX is just back on the road, but I haven't got to the payout / valuation stage yet, and all that entails..
