Had the VX booked in at Demon Tweeks last summer for a few things, on of them being a full brake pad change.

Apparently they just could not get to the rear brake pads as the rear calipers were seized. I think that they were just trying to cover themselves as they said if they put any more force on it, it would break.

Anyway, as the VX only gets little use these days they have been ok until now, but i now want to book it back in for some rear tyres and would like to get the pads done at the same time ready for a trackday in the spring.

Is this a common problem? I have done a quick search and have seen people talking about seized rear calpers, but it mainly seems to be in relation to the pad seizing to the disc, which is a different issue to mine.

Would obviusly like to avoid replacing calipers if i can help it?

Any ideas?

You should be able to tap the outer pad out (with handbrake off) and then remove the disc. Then you can wiggle the caliper with plenty of access...

What are they saying is seized? Assume they know the piston needs twisting in?

Foxy, to be honest, i can't remember as it was nearly 12 months ago.

Just trying to avoid getting it booked in again and then having the same issue.

I did see that someone offers a refurb service. How does that work though? Not sure if i've got the time, inclination or the ability to remove them myself.

I'd expect in the first instance its them not being able to swing the caliper out. It happens a lot on these cars as the pads are thin to begin with and then any lip on the disc makes it difficult to get the caliper out. Bit of brute force as above to knock the outer pad free and away you go.

Then the piston needs winding back, usually tough long nose pliers are all you need but on occasion a proper rewind kit is a big help, the only caveat to that is the vx uses a freakish hole spacing so not all kits fit.

IF they still wotn play ball, then its refurb time.

Yes. Elise parts do a kit. Before you spend out though you need to be able to remove 'that screw'. If you can't get that out cleaning the internal handbrake mechanism is a bit harder and you can't replace the o ring on the handbrake lever.
