Hi there. I would welcome some advice regarding rear springs to the 2.2 (non-turbo). Can anyone tell me where I can obtain replacements as mine have cracked.

A while back I purchased new rear bilstein shocks (yet to be fitted) but I now need the springs. By the way, are the rear springs the same for both turbo and n/a?

Any advice most welcome.

New ones from Falkener are easy and cheap to order up. I have several sets of theirs. I can't remember what the NA rear spring LB is, but I expect someone else will come along shortly and let you know. You'd also need to know the length and diameter - I'd suggest having a look with Google.

Thank you Nev. That's very useful to know. And looking at Faulkner's website, the prices do not seem too bad.

I've been looking for new front turbo springs for a while and it looks like Faulkner might be the answer. Does anyone please have the internal diameter, length and rating for turbo fronts? I've searched, but no luck. Thanks.

I have now removed the rear springs from the shocks. I assume them to be original considering the amount of corrosion present. The internal diameter is 48.5mm and the 'free' length is approx. 211mm. Slightly difficult to measure as both of my rear springs had broken, the break occurring close to the top of one and the other close to the bottom. According to previous posts, the loading weight should be 268lb

Now, Faulkners standard springs come in the 48.5mm dia. but the nearest length is 203mm and the nearest load weight is 275mm.

Trouble is that the original size would be a special order (more than double the price) plus I don't know how long they would take to make them.

If you order standard springs, their delivery is pretty close to 24 hours.

Can anybody tell me if the slight difference in length will make a noticeable change to ride height etc. If it's 8mm I can probably live with that.

Any advice most welcome.

Bob.

For your length dilema, I'd suggest doing taking the wheel off and let the wishbone assembly + damper extend downward to it's max. Then offer up the broken spring and see if it looks long enough to extend the full distance without a gap at the top + bottom of the strut. Then take your decission based on that, whether to get a slightly longer or shorter one.

HTH.

Yes, James, I'm in Marchwood, but the car is a somewhat dishevelled looking silver n/a, rather like it's owner!

Hi Chris, I tried to PM you, but it wasn't allowed. Can you please let me know whether you're interested in selling the front pair, and how much you're looking for if so? Thanks

Just to finish off this topic, I have now fitted the new springs/shocks to the rear of my car.

The springs are rather difficult to remove and similarly, the new springs  are very difficult to fit due to the small space between the springs and the body of the shocks. The standard sub £20.00 spring compressors you see on ebay will not do the job  as the claws project too much. I tried all manner of attempts, finally giving up and taking them over to my local garage. Guess what, they couldn't do it either. I then tried tool hire shops - they only stocked the wrong ones.

Finished up taking them to a motorcycle repair workshop who did the job in less than half an hour and charged me £26.00. I was so grateful, I actually tipped them a tenner!

The slight difference in spring length has no effect on the ride height.

As a postscript, I was interested to note no discernible difference between the feel of the car with leaking shocks/broken springs and the subsequent drive with those suspension items replaced! Perhaps it's my driving or perhaps the vx is so good, it will still perform to a high standard with defective suspension.

Thanks again for all the messages.

Bob

It wont have a difference in ride height because you are not hanging your collar positions. What you may have now is a higher preload. Theoretically that will effect the bump and rebound characteristics, whether it does in reality i dont know but i would be interested to hear your thoughts after a couple weeks :)

Thank you Chris for your input.

Well, I have driven it quite a lot now and I don't notice any difference. But perhaps it is a bit smoother over the bumps.

Thanks again to all who contributed.

Bob.
