Hi all Wondered if you could help, have a vx220 with the z22se in and I'm trying to solve a squeaking noise I have. With the engine at above 90c I get a squeaking noise that sounds just like an aux belt squeal. I have removed the belt but it's still there. I have listened with a stethoscope and the noise comes from the bell housing wherever there is a gap, having had the box out and inspected everything including renewing the slave cyl I'm now at a loss as to the cause. Any thoughts https://youtu.be/6Q6mezkaukc Sent from my SM-G903F using Tapatalk

Wow that sounds odd.  Air leak maybe?  Intake mani or something?

Someone here had a mystery squeak out of their gearbox and it took them years to track it down, I can't remember their name or what actually squeaked for sure, though it might possibly have been incorrect/worn clutch/flywheel parts that caused it. Try searching on here.

Might be some sort of poor interface with the flywheel for some reason.

Took the starter off while running, nervous job but it's not that and the sound definitely comes from the bell housing. In gear dragging the clutch still present so it's not the gearbox. Sent from my SM-G903F using Tapatalk

It's possible that where the clutch cover mates to the 6 lug mounts on the flywheel that there is some sort of imbalance/asymmetry, which could cause the friction plate to wobble/slip because it is not in perfect alignment perhaps. Could be caused by a slightly warped clutch cover, unequal length lugs, or possibly 1 or more lug bolts not being tightened the same as the others. Clutching at straws I know...

Think your right Nev. The thing that occurs to me is the engine came out of a low mileage automatic car, could the offset on the crank be different ? Sent from my SM-G903F using Tapatalk

I'd suggest swapping out the flywheel initially. I have a spare flywheel here in Bristol (from a Z20LET F23 box) - not sure if that the same as yours.

It's possible crank journal #1 is worn perhaps, causing a wobble on the end of the crank, or maybe the pulley that has an interference fit onto the crank end using a woodruff key is somehow worn/wobby? You could take the sumps out and inspect the bearing shells. Quite a big job. :(

Or, just ignore the problem until it sounds deadly?!

Be aware that some pressure plate bolts have a shoulder on them that's bigger than the thickness of the pressure plate. The flywheel is drilled out at the entrance to the hole to accommodate this but some are not and are threaded the whole way. Meaning when the bolt is tightened it tightens against the thread rather than clamping the pressure plate.

Box out again, clutch and flywheel off, nothing to see, no catching of any sort.

I,m going to fit a brace bar to the engine and run it up without the box on. That should rule in or out the components.

The noise is in the engine, suspected balance shafts nipping up.

many thanks to Vocky for his advice, now going to balance delete the engine and see if that solves my issue.

Agree, even with a mechanics stethoscope the sound just resonates everywhere on the back of the block.

Oooh, glad you've eliminated the gearbox.
