I've got about 7 years of crud on my rear wheels (with lots of deeply embedded iron filings) , how do I clean them for < £10 with minimal elbow action?!

I think I'm looking for a chemical reaction in a can...

Sounds to me you will need a wheel specialist to blast off all debris and repaint.

Good luck

Paul

Thanks, but "Bah humbug" to auto professionals.

Nothing a few chemicals for £5 can't sort out I think, instead of paying someone £xxx to do the same. There are 101 cans on the shelf that claim to do the job, just looking for 1+ recommendations of cans that ACTUALLY work without melting my tyres...

Iron x. You can use it on the wheels and bodywork. Stinks and turns everything purple but it'll do the job with a little brushing in. Then once clean smother the wheels in at least two coats of jetseal 109. Don't use wonder wheels or any of that acidic stuff or you'll have no wheels left!

Sounds like a possible goer, thanks Pete. Will this stuff strip my lacquer?

Any other tried and tested suggestions from others...?

I've been using iron x for years and never had an issue, I buy it in large containers and decant into a spray bottle. I've tried stuff like bilberrys and a few others but this is the best I've found so far. Apply to a dry wheel, leave to dwell, brush into any heavy stuff, rinse and repeat. I always dry any area I want to hit again so the stuff isn't being held away from the brake dust by a water barrier. Dry the wheel with a microfibre towel and seal it well. I also use it on the calipers, lower body, exhaust tips etc and it's impressive.

Ironx is OK to use on paintwork, so should be fine on the wheels

I have used purple rain in the past but by feck it stinks! I have found wd40 or similar left on the wheels a bit really breaks down the grims.

Iron x - wash the wheels to get the easy stuff off. I then dry with a leaf blower as it gets all the water out.

Spray with Iron x and leave on. I then spray a second layer on top of the first and use a brush to agitate.  Rinse off. Blow dry. Repeat. Once clean and dry. Wax polish the wheels or add a ceramic coating to prevent the brake dust sticking in the future.

Nothing is better than Blitz

And no it doesn't damage the wheel finish because you don't leave it on for 3 hours, you follow the instructions

Auto Glym Magma and Auto Finesse Iron Out are both at Halfords for about a tenner and do a similar job to Iron X. Or pop online and get Iron X or Bilt Hamber Karrosol. Use a wheel cleaner first then a coating of a fallout remover and your wheels should come up well.

Word of warning, Iron X smells like cat p*ss, horrible stuff but very effective! Look at Auto Finesse, all of their products are excellent.

Yeah trolls breath please. Currently use Bilt Hamber but its expensive and trolls breath seems to work in the same way and is a third of the price
