Electric Question - House Not Car

Evening Ladies

 

Hope everyone old and new are well.

 

Right, plenty of bright sparks on here - pun very much intended - and I wanted some advice.

 

My garage has a socket and a strip light and there is also an RDC with two switches in for both.  The armoured cable comes from the main board I guess where my meter is about 40 foot away. 

 

I am planning on putting a unit to the right of my garage which needs power.  Typically it will be similar to a 240v to caravan hook up using those male/female power connectors that caravans use.

 

The unit will have approx x3 double sockets and maybe a couple of lights.

 

What will need to be done to get the power to the unit and can it be done from the garage power?

 

I literally have no idea about electrics so be gentle.

All depends on the current draw. What are you plugging in?

All depends on the current draw. What are you plugging in?

 

Couple of computers and maybe a heater.

Do you know the size of the SWA running from the consumer in the house? There are calculators which will let you know the maximum you can draw without too much voltage drop.

The heater could be a problem.... Or maybe not! Again, it depends on a number of factors!

Steel Wire Armoured,wanted to know the size of the conductors... probably difficult to ascertain without opening up one of the terminating ends.

A 2kw heater pulls about 13amps so that will most likely be the limit of your RDC. If you want anything bigger you will need beefier cable consumer etc.

 

ETA - Those male female caravan hook ups are known as commando sockets.

Thanks Steve thats good to know. I have an electrician coming soon but I like to have a bit of info before.
