Afternoon guys,

I've been approached by a chap from Germany (on behalf of a lotus specialist - all seems legitimate), who would like to buy my Elise.

The price is pretty much what I'm after, he's asked for plenty of pictures and asked all the right questions so it appears genuine.

The arrangement he has proposed is:

I send the required bank details, when the money has cleared, he then send a man with a transporter to come and collect my Elise... job done.

Having never done anything like this before, I just want to make sure I'm not going to get burnt. Should there be a specific method of payment I should ask for, for my protection?

Id be pretty upset if the car was gone and the buyer could somehow withdraw/pull back the money.

I'm guessing cash for this amount would be a non starter?

I'm sure plenty of people on here will have done this sort of thing, so thought I'd seek advice before going any further!

Thanks,

Andy

Best to ask your bank to explain at what point the money is irredeemably in your account.

I wouldn't do that.

I would tell the buyer they have to come and see the car in person, do the paperwork, take the payment.

Then allow the third party to collect the vehicle.

Its fairly easy to export a car Aslong as the funds clear, all they have to do is fill out part of the v5 and then you let dvla know and they take the car I wouldnt care who takes the car aslong as funds are clear and paperwork is done!

What you really need to decide is what you'd do if the buyer starts messaging you after the sale complaining etc...

If you're happy to tell them to sod off, as you'd be in your right to do, then you can let the third party collect it unseen by the buyer.

I've seen too many transactions like this leading to arguments.

I sold my vx to a guy in the Netherlands. Money was transferred to my account, I met him at Harwich so he could drive it on to the ferry and back to the Netherlands... All went without a hitch. As long as money is clear in your account I cant see there being an issue? To transfer money internationally I think you need to contact your bank so internet banking fraud is unlikely to be an issue. Note that youll probably need to supply some international banking details for him to get the money to you (IBAN).
