Up till now, I have opened up to youtube videos in equal windows, side by side. adjusted each to a similar starting point, then tried to get both playing at the same time. It is very hit & miss.

I came across this alternative...

1. Download & install the free software called 'Kinovea' I think it is available for both Apple & Windows?

2. Go to Youtube & open up the videos you want to compare.

3. Copy the address line of the first video.

4. Open up a free software in another window called 'savefrom.net' Paste the saved address link & save to your Hard disc. It's quick!

6. Repeat for the second video you want to compare.

7. Open up the Kinovea software. click on View from the menu, then select 'two playback analysis screens'

8. Select 'File' then 'open video file' & select the first video you want to compare. Repeat for the second video in the second split screen.

You can now scrub each video to a starting location you want to compare, move frame by frame in each video so that you get it spot on. You can choose the speed of the playback of each video, save sequences.

What is really useful is the slo-mo ability. It allows you to see clearly who is compensating for oversteer/understeer by the angle of the steering wheel, turn in points, braking points, who's hitting the apex, who uses the full width of the track entering or exiting the corner, bad habits with hands on the wheel (I curl my thumbs in turning in, which looks really pants!)

Anyway, I'm sure many of you use other programs such as iMovie etc. But, this is really easy & quick. It is a really good analysing tool.

Hi Max,

Looking forward to giving this a test.

Only time I've tested something like this was my friends software did a overlay of two videos, me & Stuart driving out MG Cup

Looks more like its in 3D but made us laugh

The Kinovea software plays the two videos side by side, not transparently overlapped. As I said before, it's really useful when you compare the videos when played at 20% speed or slower, then good comparisons can be made & a lot of information can be gained.

I've used race render
Think it's free if your videos are under 3 mins or a small fee for longer

The main reason I used race render is because you can record lap timing on your phone using track addict and put the data straight in to race render

It can be a pita to get two videos to sync but once you have done it a few times it's quite easy

Will look forward to seeing the video you have made max

If you have data you can share and compare at https://serious-racing.com it also allows overlay of video by linking to YouTube.

I think the main problem with programs like race render & others is that when you compare someone else's YouTube video against yours or another video, 9 times out of 10, there is traffic involved in one video or both. This means that it's impossible to get an accurate realistic idea of lap times. Also, I don't always go balls out, im sure other's are the same.

I'm personally not that interested in comparing lap times due the traffic issues. Sometimes one of the car's being compared may have a passenger & the other doesn't. It makes a big difference.

For me, I am more interested in the technical positioning, lines taken into corners, braking points, gear selection into corners, time spent coasting at the end of a straight, understeer / oversteer issues through corners, who uses the full track width, where to trail brake etc. This I check corner by corner.

Time differences through corners should be minimal amongst track orientated VX's with drivers of similar abilities.

Also, most high powered cars will/ should be much faster down the straights as a pure result of having more horsepower. That said, in reality 50bhp difference appears to be minimal.

I was really shocked at how much I move around in the seat & how playful my hands are through corners.
You can also see who is tense, relaxed at the wheel, who is pushing the envelope & who isn't.

Personally, I was comparing a couple of my videos against Firthy's, Captain's & Mike's time attack vids to gauge my lines & some of the above items I've mentioned here. Generally & technically, filthy is probably the benchmark. Clearly there will be a big difference between a time attack type of lap & a fast track day lap when comparisons are made at a later date. I will have a look at a video of yours later...

...I've just purchased a book called UK circuit guide by Les Charneca from www. circuitguides.com. It's a good investment! It takes you through corner by corner through every uk circuit & explains in plain English which corners matter & how to approach each & every corner. Awesome!

Just bought the book. Seems a bit steep for a book but only equivalent of two instruction sessions so fair I suppose. Thanks for the recommendation.

I was surprised at my self how much more risk you take against the cLock in competition than you do on a normal trackday

Especially considering your on cold tires and have cold brakes
