Hi there I'm in the process of looking to buy a vx220 need some advise please.ive came up to three opsticale at the very start of looking ,do I buy a non turbo,turbo,or a supercharged version.I will be using it as a daily driver to and tho from work doing 70 miles a day .and also a lot are being sold with only soft tops I would like to have a hard top as well so is there any chance if buying a hardtop any where thanks for reading nathan

Which car you buy is tricky but the best way is to test some. Go to a local meet or keep an eye on the events pages to see if there's a track day near you and get some passenger time. The SC and normally aspirated drive the same in my view, it's just more of everything in the SC but the feel is the same. Turbo cars have a different delivery so it's what you prefer.

I can't comment on driving a turbo power delivery so it's unfair of me to say it's too bursty, BUT standard 2.2 engines and SC cars have very linear power curves, so in a scenario where you're driving in day in day out, in any condition (rain etc), having a predictable engine was great for me.

 

I drove an SC for 1.5 years as a daily car and a standard N/A for around the same again..

Considering you will be covering lots of miles every day, I would personally prefer an unmodified example. VX is not the best daily driver, but I guess you have already thought this through.

 I have never driven an NA or SC so cant comment, but owning a highly modified turbo'd VX i wouldnt want it as a daily driver and would go stage 1/2 or standard tubby with a not too harsh suspension.

Personally as a daily drive I wouldn't, the VX is great car, lots of people use them as daily's, I used mine all the time for the the first 3 months or so and the pain of getting in and out, poor boot space, rattles and hard seats just don't make it great.  

 

I would of thought for daily driving a NA is better to drive as you won't get the 'burst' of power the Turbo's give you, I own an NA, have driven a Turbo and both cars are quick, very quick, best option is to take a drive of all three and decide which you prefer.

In the winter, paint will flake and your doors won't open. Not a good daily all year. However you can get round these things which can be fun in itself. Lost my front number plate in the snow this year as I drive it whatever the weather, with a tuned engine and ITBs it's always character. But I love getting in my daily after a weekend of vx220 or a for a cross country motorway drive.

You got to be pretty dedicated to use one as a daily... I used my turbo to travel 100mls per day and lasted around 6 months before I bought a daily.

Not sure the VX doing 70miles per day makes sense.
Some people use them as a daily car but not sure they drive that far.

Stick to a standard one of you do so it’s quieter and less bumpy.
NA sound better but if power is what you need then turbo or sc will be the answer.

I used my NA as a daily for 6 years and 70000 miles, it is doable but de-icing is not fun in the winter. I am also slightly deaf as a result.
As others have said, I would go for a minimally modified car, as although the sc s are generally reliable, all of our cars are now getting old and if it's a daily driver, you need to be able to rely on it!
Having a normal car for the commute and vx for weekends is definitely the way to go if you can afford it

I wouldn't recommend the VX as a daily. Hard ride, pain to get in and out of, most have crap heaters. I have only ever driven an NA so I can't comment on NA/turbo/SC but I have read a lot of comments about highly tuned cars being difficult as a daily. Personally I would go for standard NA, or standard tubby, or stage 1 or 2 SC and a good heater and possibly install a heated seat. Definitely a hardtop for the winter. Make sure it hasn't got an overly loud exhaust system, the noise may be fun on short blasts, but it's a PITA for a daily drive.

Thanks to everyone for the info and finally got a vx took on some of your experiences and found one with s upgraded heater and hardtop.Its is a turbo stage 2 but have to remember to treat it with respect in the wet and not get into any scraps with people who want a little race ,they will have to come back in the summer lol but thanks to everyone again

I have a stage 4 turbo, the map gives it a nice linear power delivery, it's fine as a daily drive

I bought my standard NA with 59k on the clock. I used it daily in all weather conditions- it's seen more rain, mud and snow than it has sunshine! I covered 25,000 miles in the first fourteen months. I hope you're ready for the big list of problems I encountered from actually using my car as a car...

 

 

1: Had to replace the shitty GAZ Coilovers my car came with. The condition of them didn't match the rest of the car so I'm guessing they were already well used when fitted by the previous owner.

2: Nearside toe link broke on the way home from work after hitting a pot hole.

 

 

Aaaaaaand that's it. I do look after my cars though.

If you can get in and out easily enough then there's no reason you shouldn't or can't use one daily. Fitting a carpet definitely helps in the winter- the heater is rubbish and I couldn't feel it doing anything until I fitted the carpet. The Carpet also quietens it down immensely inside

They're cheap to run, cheap to maintain and they're easy to work on. Buy based on condition, not on mileage. Some of the ridiculous priced low mileage cars I'm seeing for sale are nowhere near as well looked after or clean as my 90k mile car.
