What are the rules with this and what’s doable? I have friends on the US, can they buy them locally at the cheap price and simply send them across - or bring them with them
Just wondered if anyone had done this....

last set of imported compcams came to nearly £800, exchange rate is now even worse

customs are pretty strict, but if they are secondhand then the value would be much less
perhaps you could remove the original packaging
ps: they also charge import duty on the shipping cost

I’m just wondering if there is a way to do it through friends who live in the US to minimise tax impact... Cost for cams only is £400!!!

hand luggage would stop the extra import tax on the shipping cost, but they would need paperwork to prove the secondhand value.

import duty would be about £80 - £100 in hand luggage (at new price)
you would normally pay, shipping cost, import duty on the shipping cost, a handling fee, plus the cost to deliver from customs to your door

Let friends buy them, remove outer packaging and have them send to you as a set of 2nd hand cams. Invoice value $100.

Disguise them as a cheap souvenir

Bear in mind that if you ship things with a low value to minimise import duty and it gets lost you can only claim for the low value on any postal insurance. Isn't this a little illegal too?
