After having undertaken a series of ski lessons on our local dry slope, Jnr has decided that no overseas holiday in the sun next year, but one in the snow.  We're happy to do this.

 

It's been many years since we went overseas to ski, therefore looking for some recommendations for resorts:

 

Relatively close to an airport - to reduce rental car driving time.

 

Probable decent snow covering in February.

 

Not too difficult.

 

A few places to eat and buy groceries.

 

Any thoughts.

 

Now, if anyone happens to own and rent out an apartment in such a place, I'd happily consider renting it...

You need to ask on Snowheads - not here

 

If I was taking a novice to the snow, I'd pick a smaller resort and avoid the big names.  That works providing you can fend for yourself in French/Italian/German.

 

Les Gets would work (other than being a satellite of a bigger circus with associated raised costs).  Mrs P is taking her mates to Le Grand Bornand, which is just what I mean, food and accommodation can be half the big resorts whilst there's plenty to keep a beginner happy.

This is good advice, the "family" resorts are cheaper, less lift queues, quieter (often) and generally more tranquil.

I'm not a skier but many friends here are and they all go to resorts in the Pyrenees, Laroque d'Olmes and Les Angles are two of the most popular.  Les expensive, less crowded and easy access via Perpignan Airport although Baecelona, Girona, Carcassonne and Toulouse are all possible alternatives although further.

I pretty much exclusively ski Austria now because of the apres ski. In France everyone's in bed by 10!

Having a lazy saturday morning after cleaning the VX and thought I would log on here to see whats going on and there is Pidgeon plugging away our business... how very nice of you and nice to be remembered!

 

I agree with Pidgeon as well, avoid the big resorts for first timers and head somewhere with a bit of charm. 

Funnily enough I used to live a few miles from Le Grand Bernand in St Jean de Sixt...... they will have a good time and its close to La Clusaz if they want a change of scenery for a day.
