My original rears are finally down to the legal limit (no jokes about I'm not diving the car hard enough  ).

I believe that the Potenza RE040's 225/45R17 90 W are not available any more, although I think a while ago somebody posted up that they were available from BlackCircles...but I cant find them!

Can anybody suggest the closest available tyre/compound to the RE040 that is currently available.

Thanks

Dave

RE040 are a terrible Tyre anyway, changing them will be a blessing.

road use, something like Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3 will be great Tyre (cheap too)

I found the re040 to be fine (on an NA). I've swapped to s001 and I think the balance has shifted to more grip on the front (more oversteery). The s001 has very deep wide grooves so I'd imagine they're better in deep standing water.

Thanks for the suggestion....I've gone a bit OEM at least on my orginal wheels and tyres, if possible :) . I believe that Lotus designed the original suspension set up on the VX with the Potenza RE040 in mind.

Thanks for that, the S001's are standard fitment on my wife's MX5, so I can see the tread pattern in the flesh so as to speak.

Just another option... I changed from Potenza's to Hankook Ventus V12 Evo's (on standard turbo rims) and they have been fantastic.

Another vote for Goodyear F1 F1 Asymmetric 3. Good on my VX sc, when I need to replace them, they will be top of my list.

However I hear that Continentals are pretty good too...........

Hi Dave,

I found the Conti 3’s a marked improvement on the RE040’s when I made the change. I thought the only company selling the old compound was now Camskill?

It’s rare for someone to stick to the OEM specs these days but I have to agree with you.

If you fit a more track biased tyre you definitely compromise the cars all year round driveability. Fine for Sunmer but not so clever in the Winter. 👍

Good luck.

Thanks for the advice,

My fronts have still got plenty of tread on them, so just wanted to keep the rears as close to OEM at the moment. My other sets of wheels and tyres are really just for the track, and as you say not the best for all year round drivability, plus like reserve the rubber on the track tyres for the track.

I've had Conti's in the past on my RR and found that on that car they "feathered" quickly on the outer shoulders, a known trait on that car with those tyres....so a bit undecided on Conti's at the moment.

cheers

Dave

No worries DAVE. I do not think this will be a problem on a light car like the VX or Elise personally

I'm after some new tyres as well, I currently have Kumho KU39 fitted, which have been fine but they don't seem to be available any more, anyone running newer Kumhos?
