My manifold has cracked and now the VX sounds like a tractor!! i've taken it to the garage and they have said £200 for the new manifold and 8 to 16 hours to remove and fit ? does that sound about right?

Thanks in advance

Aaron

Way too long but they may not have done one before and may be planning worst case.

Is that the price of a brand new manifold? Doesn't seem to be to bad actually. I've always just got a second hand one.

They are not making a silly margin on the manifold.

As for the work, babyhands may get it replaced with only the engine lid and diffuser off, and it's just a few hours.

Once they need to take the clam off (or shove it backwards 20 cm for better access), it's a different story and much closer to the quote you got.

Throw in some snapped bolts it doesn't sound far off.

Consider upgrading to a Tullett manifold if it’s that much...

Good luck doing it with the clam on. Would be a right pain in the ass.

Sound about right if removing the rear clam. But as everyone says, go for a tullet. If you can get the precat taken out then even better.

IMO... Tullet (or any) fannymold is a bit of a waste though unless you are buying a whole exhaust system or supercharging (even then its marginal until you're notional 'Stage 3-ish'). Its £500 and you can't see it, doesn't add much in the way of power unless you have a full exhaust and going big spend NA or SC, and they can (like any custom manifold) suffer from their own issues. Oh and the standard heat shield doesn't fit...

A large hammer can persuade the heat shield to fit the tullet.

At least for me it did, but i had the lower part that was riveted on removed. Only using the top part.

I recommend getting a quote from a VX220 specialist. The labour will vary wildly depending on if they have experience with what they can and can't do on a VX220 with the rear clam on. Suspect the 16 hours assumes the whole rear has to come off. A specialist will know what they're doing so might have a higher labour rate, but they'll get it done much quicker.

Managed to get my standard manifold swapped to a Tullett with the clam on. Was tight though, with a few swear words

I've done standard manifold with clam on too.

It's definitely possible.

Local specialist to me has quoted me 4 hours (with clam in place).

I found it impossible to remove the standard heat shield without cutting part of it, with the clam on. No Physical space to get it out the way..
