The plod in Wales started a scheme over a year ago asking members of the public with dashcams to send in anything they see that constitutes law breaking.  Basically asking the public to become police informers.  This is how police states start, it's the thin end of the wedge, secretly report on other people, you neighbours and so on.  The police were asking for a ban on .50 cal sniper rifles (used in this country for long range competition - only 129 registered owners) because they have no defence against these weapons.  How many attacks using this type of weapon since the IRA ceasfire?  Zero.  And, if there were such an attack what is the likelihood it would be a legally registered weapon?  Zero. No matter what powers the police have they always want more.

How many people here have considered the way they use their dash-cam? Firstly, do you have the GPS/Speed indicator switched on? Depending on how you drive is that a good idea? Secondly, what size SD card have you got in the dash-cam?

If you were driving the VX (or perhaps any other car for that matter but especially the VX) and you were pulled in for an offence by a traffic car and the officer saw you had a dash-cam, he would be entitled to seize the SD card, ostensibly as 'evidence' of the offence you have committed. I say ostensibly because in fact he wouldn't need it, but by using this excuse to seize it he would be able to go through all the footage, looking for 'discovering in the course of his investigation' other offences you might have committed. Anything from clipping a double white, late through traffic lights as they change, to exceeding the speed limit on an overtake where you found yourself in the position of needing to accelerate because the twat you're overtaking put his foot down. If you were driving the VX the chances are he would all ready be prejudiced and have you down as the sort of driver who would be breaking the law in some way.

Unless you're on a holiday road trip or something, you don't need a 128 gig SD card that keeps days of footage before it's finally overwritten. If you have an incident you need to keep you press the button and it's stored on a protected file that won't be over written and that's all you need. So sensibly should you should have the smallest Class 10 SD card possible which will overwrite in hours rather than days? I have a 16 gig card because I have front and rear cams but when I had just the front it was 8 gig or just a couple of hours recording before overwrite.

Also, how is your camera power controlled? Is it hard wired start up on ignition or cigarette lighter socket? Mine is hard wired to a permanent live feed which in the VX is the lighter socket but on most cars the lighter socket is not permanently live. Though hard wired nevertheless I have an on/off switch (needed in the VX), but,if I hard wired to another car I would still use a permanently 'on' function (horn perhaps) with an on off switch to allow me to leave it on when necessary (supermarket car parks for example) a prime place for a drive off hit. You can buy a battery especially for the purpose but they cost more than the dash cam.

Does your dash-cam have a battery or a capacitor? Mine has a capacitor. This means that if at any time when driving I come across circumstances where I need to turn the camera off I can do so and it will turn off immediately, and then back on as required. With a battery you can't easily do this.

Just a few things to consider.

this is what I feared. However I very much doubt if the police will be able to cope with all the crap which will be sent into them.

Mmmmm, so how do i identify the absolute t*t on a bike who fails to stop at red lights and the plethora of other road laws he disobeys, oh i cant, yet he can quite happily send in any info on cars for the culprit to be identified.

I agree with Andy, we are just easy targets to prosecute as its cut and dried if we are on the phone, speeding etc

However, i guess we all know we shouldnt be breaking the law and personally wouldnt complain if i got caught we know the risks. I am not sure i like the idea of policing ourselves to that degree and dont think the public can be trusted. In a situation where some footage might be valid and well worth advising the Police of. they will be trolling through countless of hours of sh*t as Sutol says because some do gooder or BRAKE patron has nothing better to do and feels they are "helping" to make the roads safer.

But, maybe we can get out own back, lets get some footage of middle lane morons in, see what happens :)

We could just all get dash cams and spam the police so they have to shut it down... Just sending in hours of mundane footage with no incidents for them to trawl through

Like many, many things, I just don't get how they have the resources for this...

When demand exceeds capacity, you must prioritise how you use your capacity to get the best value from it... why is it that coucils, police, NHS etc., etc., all fail to understand this basic principal?

Arresting and criminalising people who write a nasty twitter on twatter, or who carry a few joints of cannabis, meanwhile, lots of hurt caused by antisocial behaviour, muggings, robberies etc., just go uninvestigated... and don't get me started on the NHS... boob jobs and IVF at the cost of life saving cancer drugs!
