Hi, I got holt of a used f23 gearbox 4,17 ratio. Does it make sense to open it for rebuild or these f23 are robust so it will be waiste of money and time?

Any experience?

depends on the mileage, generally they are good for 100k or more without any rebuild

I've just got a 4.17 also, looking to fit in the future..

I think for peace of mind I'm going to take it to a gearbox place for a strip and inspection.

If the cars all in bits, it would be soul destroying to build it all back up to find out the gearbox is whiney or crunchey :(

does the gear selector shaft have any play on the bearing?

Any place to source the spare parts?

I found out these to be quite pricey, more than the actual gearbox.

also I can't find synchro's kits availiable

I got quoted from £600 to £1000 to rebuild, far cheaper to buy a second hand box (assuming you can find a goodish one).

That is roughly what you would need to pay for a set of decent bearings.

But beware of fake bearings, there are plenty about and they soon fail

I got quoted £150 to strip and inspect, that was by Banbury gearboxes in Oxfordshire.

Wow, sounds cheap on the face of it, I wonder how much the parts + labour to build it up are...

Looks like they have a set pricelist, not entirely sure what the price entails...

When / if I take it in I'll just say it's going in a Vectra if they ask, to avoid any potential VX220 'tax'
