Does anyone know if I can fit 215/45 R17 tyres onto the standard front wheels instead of the 175/55 R17 that are normally fitted

When I first came on this forum years ago I was aware that as a general rule on rim width you can fit a tyre up to two sizes larger or two sizes smaller. There was a lot of discussion and trepidation about running wider tyres on standard 175 rims so I kept my trap shut because I thought those discussing it knew more than me. Then lo and behold it was discovered that our Speedster friends were running 195 tyres on standard rims. For a 175 rim would guess 195 is the max - anything larger than 195 risks the tyre unseating because the tyre will not sit correctly on the bead seating. I've run 195s without problem. 215? No way. The two size up and down rule may not apply to ultra low profile tyres tho'.
