Just making up a new engine loom, and wanted opinions on the best finish and protection.

What are the pros and cons between heat shrink and expandable braided sleeving?

Or can you use both - the sleeving on top of the heat shrink...

You could use both. In my experience, heatshrunk requires tools and can provide higher stiffness and waterproof to an extent. Braided PE sleeve is faster to put on and reworkable.

Heatshrink is more fuel / oil / chemical resistant and there are specific heatshrinks for looms depending on the environment that it's being used in.  They are less flexible than braid and more permanent.  My preference would be heatshrink near the motor so it's more wipe clean and then go to braid where it's less likely to get dirty.
