Learning - Gear Linkage Cable Failed Due To Bad Placement

Thought I'd share a learning with you regarding my gear linkage cables. A couple of track days ago, I came in off a session and it felt like the car was still in gear even though it was in neutral. The next time I took car out and put it in the trailer, it kept popping out of 1st.
I managed to do my next track day but something wasn't right.
I was hoping it wasn't my box, so I bought some new fully synthetic oil and hoped for the best. Then when doing the oil change today I did a bit more googling and found that the gear linkage cables could be issue, so I popped off the cables on the gearbox end and found the forward back motion was still stiff. Bingo, I am really pleased it's not my box but it has cost me £225 on a new cable and probably a pain to fit.
The learning here is that the cable must have been right next to the downpipe of the exhaust and this could have been avoided if I moved it away from this pipe. The exaust has been off a few times and New brace bar fitted, so I must have nudged it towards the exhaust pipe.
So next time you're under the car, please make sure it is away from this pipe and maybe strap it away. I hope this helps.

True!
I also bought some pipe-type heatshielding to put on the cables and being paranoid about having to swap the cables again I also manufactured a small aluminium heatshield that bolts to the engine mount.

My car has a hook for the gear cables that stops them getting close to the exhaust. It's fitted on the heat shield bolt

If they are na.
Sure, but Partridge told me they weren't model specific. They're from a VXR. I'll send pics if you like
Edit - Partridge was wrong. VXT/R ones are longer!
