I have a 2003 n/a 67000 miles had 3 yrs now thinking of doing the jobs on it.
It needs cam doing and exhaust manifold and then possibly sc.
My question is should I do the jobs or just simply trade/ sell to pickup one already done as there's plenty on the market done
Because mine stands me at 9k school would be 3k exhaust £500 cam/ balance £250 not including the labour is it worth my time and effort???,

I bought my 2001 NA for £8k coming up to 4 years ago. I've done the SC kit (Joe and Vocky and circa £5k fitted) and at the last service put the full 2.5" tullet exhaust system (headers, cat, exhuast) (£2k) and have done a bunch of other stuff (proalloy 60ltr tank £450 fitted), nitrons (£1600), GARW 8" (£600), spitfire tie rods, brace and fuel pump (probably £700 fitted) etc.

 

Probably all in now some £17.5k spent (including car price and not finished there). I'll not get that for it, probably lucky to get £12.5k) so that would suggest if you can get one all sorted, it would save you money.

 

However, I bought mine as a long term keeper for track fun and even if I spend another £5k on a quality respray and trim (taking me to £22.5k) it'll still take a lot of money more to get something better and at least I know everything that needed to be done had been done properly.

Yep I've seen them built and look excellent going for 12k- 14k and I just ask myself clams off loads of work up grading loads of things there are guys out there who just want to build the n/a to good/ excellent standard then are bored and want to do it again but as you've said you go to that time and effort and will eventually lose money

If you like to and got time to get your hands dirty get a stock na and diy.
Otherwise makes much more sense financially to buy a well sorted one... you just need to be lucky to find a good one.

Tricky decision.

I would say that you know the car, it’s good and bad points, and if you bought another you don’t know what you’re getting into.

I know mine and what needs doing is akward jobs chains and exhaust manifold I think that's whats putting me off and making me think buy one done as I'm not looking forward to the jobs I need to do

Why not just do all the work at once whilst you have the clam off?  It makes doing the timing chain and other bits around the engine so much easier.

 

Plus as people say, better the devil you know....

 

Knowing exactly what went into any modifications, how much care was taken, that no corners were cut, etc etc. is also a plus in my eyes, as a previous owner could have bodged it...

 

Plus, there is something extremely satisfying about turning that key for the first time once you have done the SC
