Driving back from some track days reminded me just how bad my headlights are for light - I think an old bloke walking in front of me holding a lit candle would have been brighter!

Not looking to do anything radical like HIDs etc, so, just wondering if anyone has any suggestions re a good quality new bulb that won't over heat the headlamp and provide at least 2 candles worth of light :)

Ideally, I'd like some brand new headlights with carbon surrounds etc, but I'll be behind a long queue for those but will buy when I can...

Thanks in advance for any suggestions / help.

I've found the Halfords extreme brilliance good (made by Ring).

Another vote for the Halfords brilliance. I might still have some in the garage if you are struggling as I have now upgraded to Fez fronts 👍

Part of the low-light problem by now may be that the reflectors themselves are starting to corrode/oxidise and losing a lot of reflective surface.

The (rising) heat from the bulb tends to create a dull spot/track above it that slowly grows.

Not much you can really do about that except, unfortunately, taking the unit apart, stripping the dip beam unit down and sending it off to be stripped, sanded and polished and then re-silvered.

Not cheap usually (simply lots of labour) and on the VX headlights with all the glued-in bits it's not going to be a nice job :(

You can usually get an idea of the state of the reflector without opening it up by shining a small flashlight into the headlight from the front and at the same time looking in through the lense. Moving your head in and out can let you focus on the reflector surface and 'scan' around it. You look quite weird to others doing that in front of your car though..   :D

Bye, Arno.

Thanks @turbo and @arno.  I'll try the bulbs first as a temporary measure as I'm really after some carbon Fezzasuss front lights when they become generally available.

I've recently put in Osram Night breakers and they were a big improvement over 'standard' bulbs

Same with night breakers, used to run then in a taxi that was going all night. Only used to last a month.

Can anyone attach an image of the halfords extreme brilliance please- i have had a look at the ring lights and am unsure which ones they are. They are not labelled 'extreme brilliance unless I am missing it! Thanks.
