Hi all, I am looking to buy a VX220 to replace my immaculate MX5 mark 1, which I am selling as I live within the London ULEZ 😟.

It will be very much a weekend toy and I understand the lack of creature comforts.

Ideally looking to spend up to £12k, but I keep trying to justify a budget increase!

Can’t decide Re standard, turbo or supercharged - I don’t need a quick car, just a fun one, so don’t need turbo or supercharged- however.......

12k will get you a great NA or potentially a supercharged car. Turbos generally start around 12k and head north from there as the condition improves.

I had an NA and now a turbo and the turbo performance wise just feels that more exhilarating even at low speeds.

Thing you should consider are the ongoing costs. If it’s on original rad you are looking at clam off and nearly £200 for a new rad, rear toe links will be hundreds of pounds, exhaust hundreds so on and so forth. I would set budget and get the beat car you can with all the “car is now 15-2 years old” work done with receipts. Don’t fall into the UK mentality trap of worrying about miles or age a well looked after high mile VX is always going to drive better than a low miles poorly maintained one.

Depends what you find most fun. If the seat-ward shove of acceleration gets you going you'd probably get a lot of fun out of a turbo, with all the VX's fantastic steering feel but a bit less of pure driving experience. 

 

If fun for you is sublime steering feel, handling and being able to corner harder than most things on the road then the NA is going to be a great car for you. 

 

As Colin says, £12k should get you a great NA, but another £2k on top should see you break into Turbo or SC territory and also get a really good car.

 

Buy on condition. You'll get a lot more for your money buying privately or through the likes of Jon Seal.

Do you have a garage or will it be parked on the street? If parallel parked in London, consider the fact that it is small and low and people will probably reverse into it. Although replacement clams are available, lights are are harder to come by (and very expensive)

Owned two VXs and parallel parked on the street zone 3 London never had a problem. If anything cars seem more careful around it than anything else parked on the street!
