I hate that chunky Astra mirror inside the car, it has always bothered me. So I set about scouring ebay for something that would replace it. I looked for Metro mirrors and Matiz ones as claimed on various bits of the interweb but I wanted to have one that bolted right onto the ball of the existing mount, not set about replacing anything and the ones I saw on ebay didnt have sockets for the ball on the top of the mirror.

So I continued my search, I then chanced upon a Smart Car mirror £10 by a breaker near me. Got the mirror, tried to fit to my car, the mount was too small the ball wouldnt fit. So out came the trusty dremmel and I sanded back the plastic socket on the mirror a touch, tried again and it popped on! #winning

Its about half the width of the monstrosity that was there before and kind of looks quite cool, has dimming feature too. And doesnt cost £150 or whatever it was from Sector 111 for a bleedin interior mirror. I am a happy bunny.

Looks like a good option! I ended up with a MK 2 Golf mirror in mine, but the Smart car mirror looks more suited to the car.

Sorry if being thick, but assuming this is a Smart For Two car mirror, or any Smart Car?

Hiya, it was from a Smart For Two. I had four saved in my ebay watch list and all have been sold when I checked this morning! I bought mine from ebay user floatingthoughts, actually picked it up from his place as he lived down the road nice guy very genuine, he says he gets mirrors in all the time so maybe drop him a message and he can source one (including in stock the mk2 golf ones which also fit apparently) https://www.ebay.co....OR/324182252526 here is the link to the one I bought.

Nice! You will need to take a little plastic off the bracket on the mirror - I got a dremmel and a sander and literally did 5 seconds on the inside of the socket then tried it and repeated till it popped on comfortably. It wont go on without that little modification of the bracket.

Problem with those are:

-You have to get the whole OEM mount off the window
-The suction cup isn’t as strong on the window as the OEM mount already in place
-Once you have the smart car mirror in place it’s properly in place there is no vibration issues like the suction cup ones
-smart car one has dimmer option for night time driving

I paid a tenner for my mirror, with a minor alteration it was pop old one off pop new one on took literally minutes, and if any buyer in the future wants it, I can put the old one back on

Not had an interior mirror in mine for all the time I've had it (10 years now)...

Yeah I considered that but I do like one being there (also for MOT purposes!) as living in London it’s useful to be able to see directly behind you

Aye but try parking in tight spots in London with just door mirrors, also people wandering about behind you as you reverse, so on and so forth. I am sure if you live somewhere less built up, less populated, have driveway, etc. then not having any visibility behind you is fine, but I have seen a lot in that rear view mirror that door mirrors would have missed. It just makes sense to have more visibility of whats behind you than less.

Do you think this would work, with a bit of mirror glass glued to it?

Why not just use the Smart car mirror?  It's cheaper and much less faffing about too.

Because door mirrors do not show you what is directly behind you. Absolutely essential in cities, and where I live where reversing is a common requirement and possibility of people meandering around behind you a real possibility that door mirrors will not see.
