Hello all. What are the preferred track tyres and more importantly what sizes? Im running standard VXT wheels so 17 inch

Ive had a single seater and a few track cars and the ZZR or R888 were my choice but on 13/15 inch rims. My Renault sport Megane had the AR1s but not sure what the VXT needs

At the moment i have Potenza 070 225/45/17 rears and Potenza 040 175/55/17 on the fronts....but thy are cracking so think they are original tyres

Almost everybody who decides to run the VX on track switches to 16"/17" on the team dynamics pro race 1.2 or compmotive wheels, or sometimes 17"/17" on the ATS DTC wheels.

Then, R888R, ZZR or 595 RSR are all popular choices.

For 16"/17" its generally 195/50/16 and 225/45/17.

I had a read of that last night but the posts are almost 10 years old and im sure there are newer better tyres available. But it was a good read and highlights there isnt a single preferred set up out there lol

Not much has changed over the 10 years. Most main players have the same tyres, just a typing difference.
Some minor behavior difference that you need proper skills to fully assess.
595 used to be a killer when introduced, but caught on price wise not so much later.

Most use Federal RSR 595, Toyo R888R, Kumho V70A, Yokohama A048 or Avon ZZR.

The V1s look pretty decent. Has anyone tried these yet?

I was tempted to try the NS-2R's, one of the very few tyres that will actually fit on the original front rims. Anyone had any experience with these on a plastic car?

I've had a set, but on the 16/17s.  They were ok when new, but below the performance levels of the 595s.

I ended up giving them away about half way through because they went really bad over winter.  Weren't that great in the wet either.

I'd probably avoid them TBH.

595's here and had 3 sets now. Previously for the cost/miles they've been satisfactory but the last 2 years the car hasn't really been used. Given my yearly mileage is now around 1k I was thinking of treating myself to some R888R.

If you are still on original wheels then it would be worth looking at a 16/17 setup or getting some original rear rims for the front to open up some more tyre sizes. They come up for sale occasionally, I'm sure someone will have a set of spares knocking around that they would let go.

I'll second the benefits of the 16"/17" wheel set up. I have also got on well with the 595 RSR's. Normally get about 5-6k of good grip (95% on the road) out of the rears before they hit the wear bars, and they do fairly well in the wet, but I did struggle to find any at even close to sensible prices recently so ended up buying the R888R's.

I know Joe (Max88 Performance) was able to get R888R a while ago for a good price.

Cheers for the replies lads.

Ive seen a fair few suggestions about 17 rear and 16 front......... where are people getting the 16 turbo front wheel? Was it ever a standard fitment as the VX parts list only shows 17s. And 15s for winter tyres.

I know the SXI have similar wheels to the VXT

At the moment i am drawn to the NS2R in 235/45/17 rear and 195/45/17.front. These fit the standard 17 wheels i currently have.

The 16/17 setup being talked about is for aftermarket wheels.

The 16" fronts that look like the snowflake turbo wheels are from Astras.  You will need a spacer too to get the offset right.

Set here.  Think the spacer is 16mm IIRC.

I have run these in the past, works well.

On the tyre front I run the R888R.  They are great, last well on track, are passable in the wet, only note is on hot days they can go off quite quickly.

Do you have any photos of how they look when fitted to the car? Is it an obvious different wheel compared to the rear? Mine will be powder coated black so may not show out as much?

I've used ZZS on the car for a couple of years now, I switched from ZZR as Avon do not recommend them for road use, especially in the wet. As a drive from Scotland to say Cadwell is an 800 mile round trip I did not want to take the chance of the Insurance co using that recommendation to get out of a claim (as if they would try to squirm out of anything!).  Worth picking up on if you drive to the circuit and back and use on road for pleasure (I am too lazy to have two sets of wheels to swap around).

Found no difference with the ZZS to ZZR on a dry track, but christ, in the wet, WHAT a difference. Also, driving on wet roads, again, massive difference.
