Wheels And Tyres Questions

Good day all,
 
So currently have 17” alloys on my car and want to put some tyres for track work - what are the go to choices for the VX now? Ideal sizes for front and rear??
 
Also I see that most have converted to 16/17” combo - is this worth doing as getting new tyres anyway? What advantages does it bring on track? Would I notice the difference?

Obviously just new tyres wll be the cheapest.

 

I'd shop around for your chosen tyres, see what sizes are available, prices etc before splashing out on new wheels etc.

 

Obviously you'd want to retain, or achieve a decent F/R balance for track use, and not end up with say far too much grip at the front, and very tail happy. 

 

My car came with 16/17 on it, I've 195/50x16 A052's at front and 225/45x17 A052's at the rear. And even then the back end can be a little loose. Standard suspension though which will no doubt play a role.

I'm borrowing the thread a bit, im about to buty new tires to fit my new 17" wheels. What tires do people here recommend for road use and maybe a trackday once and a while but mainly road use. Anyone ? :) Thanks!

Thanks for the reply - as you say probably best to see what I can get first - not sure if I have a preference though? R888s have had before I liked but open to other suggestions....

 

Also interested to see if there would be much difference going to 16" on the front? The spec you have seems to be a good recomendation from what I have read so far...

Apparently Toyo have pulled out of UK, so 888's are becoming unobtainable.

 

For mainly road use, the likes of Michelin PS4 or PS5 would be hard to overlook. OR some of the new Continental stuff.

As the 17's are naturally larger, I think some say there can be clearance issues, light fouling on lock etc. I don't know how bad that is though.

Also, whilst low sidewalls can look good, they may not always be the most progressive when they break away, and again, check what tyre sizes you need and tyres you want, vs what is available.

 

Might be more choice in some 17's than 16's

 

Initially I just ran some Continental premium contact 6/7's, F/R, only as they didn't do a 7 in the 16" size. And for road use, wet, they seemed a very good tyre. I'd have preferred a Michelin, but less options for pure road use in 16 these days

 

As it's mainly hillclimbs and sprints now, I opted for the A052, which seem to work well.

I have the old 16/17 setup and use the likes of Federal 595-RSR but have moved over to the Nankang NS2R. Decent levels of grip without being super expensive. This is a dry day/occasional track use car. These cars are lighter than most so it takes longer to get heat into the tyres and they don't react the same.
