Been using federal RSRs and have found them to be excellent, think they're no longer available, what's the current favoured sticky semi slick?

yoko a052. very soft, very good in wet. 1s for 1minute faster than rsr in dry

I'm still on the old A048rs and will probably stick with them while they're available.  The A052 is not quite a replacement - although supposed to be a replacement that complies with ECE R1172 - 02 noise, rolling resistance and wet grip regulations.  Massive difference in price though.

Nankang NS-2Rs for a few years and I like the water clearance, the sidewall stifness and the noise. The grip level is higher than my bravery.

Thanks for that, might give them a try, although nsrs look like they may be still available..

A friend of mine used the soft compound Zestinos and loved them..........for about 10 laps. They didn't last well. Apparently the harder compound isn't great either.

 

NS2R's were great on my Z4 3.0 but it is hard getting heat into them in a VX220. Maybe they work better on heavier cars?

 

RSR's of old were brilliant for the money but the last time I used them they were terrible, like they had changed the compound or something.

 

I had this discussion with Foxy at the national this year, he had some wise words for me. He had gone full circle through every brand of track tyre and came right back to where he started, R888R. They just seem to be the only tyre that are consistently good. When my NS2R's give out that is what I'm getting next.

 

Re-assuringly expensive but worth it in my mind!

The updated (summer 2023) Nankang CRS will be a serious contender when available .
It has good reviews in the USA (beware, most reviews are about the original CRS, which is not so good)

So from that , you could imply they are very good if not doing hard prolonged track use ?

 

I'd have no intentions of doing that, largely mostly short track or hillclimb. So long duration endurance would be of no concern, good performance straight out of the box would matter more

 

I've always found 888's to be very over-rated when I used them before, although that was on a heavy car, and they really didn't last well at all for road use. And in the rain they were woeful, although that was not unexpected.

 

So would imagine for short duration use, they'd massively struggle to get any heat in them to work ? Colder climate up here too

I've always been disappointed with 888's

 

When I said they, I meant would the Zestinos then be good for short duration use like hillclimbs, as they are in the 1B list.

 

Also yes, the latter part did mean "they", as in 888's would struggle to get any heat in them for a light car and short usage. Confusing.com

Err, yes I am a bit confused.

 

Right, lets try another tack. 

 

Zestino soft compound = Cheap, ultra sticky, lasts 5 minutes.

 

R888R = pricey but consistently work well on a vx.

 

NS2R = very cheap, works great on heavy cars, don't seem to work particularly well on a vx.

 

For hill climb, my choice would be zestino as they are very soft and easy to get up to temperature.

 

Incidentally, I've just bought a set of NS2R for by back up/inclement weather track car. It weighs about 1450kg so should work well with the nankangs.
