2. Vauxhall VX220
The Vauxhall VX220 is true to the old dictum: ‘if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em.’ Charged with building an affordable roadster, Vauxhall’s engineers contacted Lotus for help. The result is a car that owes much to the seminal Elise – 15% of the parts are shared – but one that adds a dose of civility. The Vauxhall has anti-lock brakes, an airbag and even a cupholder - none of which feature in an Elise. But don’t get carried away, this is still a focussed and compromised driving machine. Entry and exit is far from easy, the cabin is spartan Vauxhall VX220: the VX220 is quite literally Vauxhall's version of the Lotus Elise.

and the hood is awkward compared with a Mazda MX5. Take to the road, though, and none of this seems to matter. The VX220 has a wonderful 150bhp, 2.2-litre engine, which is far superior to the Rover lump found in the Lotus. The handling isn’t quite as sharp as an Elise, but it’s more flattering and failsafe for the most drivers. At £21,745 this is a Vauxhall to buy from the heart.

Second only to the Elise - D'oh!! Interesting to see they didn't rate cars like the Z3 or S2000, but included MG TF, MX5, MR2. Although not quite sure the Pug 206CC is a sportscar? And no VXT!!!! :o :D :D

I think most of these tin-pot 'net reviews just rehash TG and CAR magazine reviews. Only the Stig could put a knife between the handling abilities of these two fantastic cars yet its a clear cut thing to MSN cars aparrently...
