Couldn't sleep on Sunday morning so decided to go and take a look at the so called trumpet thing in the airbox. After about 45 mins of farting about trying to find a spanner the right size to get the wheel nuts off and scratching an alloy, it was reasonably simple I guess. Whipped the trumpet pipe out and put it all back together with only a few cuts and scratches. The result? Well it's difficult to say as there may be some placebo effect at work... I think the the engine is ever so slightly louder when revving hard now. Also, that feeling of acceleration that I had when I first drove the VX which has slowly worn off seems to have come back again - Although I can't guarantee that my mind isn't playing games. My missus' opinion was that "it still feels fast" - ok, thanks... Still it was free, and at least now I know how to get to the airbox reasonably easily.

Is in through the wheel arch the only way to get to the air filter? I would have thought you could go in through the top?

It's only the top half of the box you need to remove, so you may be able to get in from the top - the only thing is the spring clips that hold the top and bottom halves together might be a bit tricky to get to, especially on the side nearest the outside of the car. Depends when you're ham fisted or not I guess. One other thing, whilst looking around in the wheel arch I noticed the pipe that draws the air into the filter box was pointing away from the air vent on the side of the car. Pulled it out a little and twisted it towards the vent which should help.

Why do they put this in?
Does this mod only work with pre-cat removal or other mods I'm unaware of? cheers
By the way, does anybody have dyno figures or know the bhp/ftlb gains of the de-pre-cat mod.
cheers

I think someone once mentioned that the pipe is their to quieten the engine slightly.

My car is totally standard (stills has the precat for now).

Or you could totally remove the airbox and fit a nice induction kit to it ;)

Did you do that yourself? Pretty straightforward? Could be an option when I have a bit of spare cash...
