Right my car flew through its MOT last week with no probs other than a small front plate

Anyway i asked said [vaux] mechanic to check the ball joints etc.. because there is a knock coming from left front when on full lock in forward and reverse..

He said everything is fine  , but it is still doing it

There is no play whats so ever in my steering..so it has to be the ball joint right?

My local VX dealer has none in stock [now theres a suprise] and i need to get them done a.s.a.p.

Ive done the old search function and read somewhere that Elise ones can be fitted...

Im guessing that its the S2  Yes or No

I take it they need to pressed out?.. has anyone else done it themselves....

From what you say it sounds like a ball joint but there are other things it could be. I had mysterious knocking that eventually turned out to be a ball joint, that went through MOT inspections for 3 years before they finally picked it up

AFASIK the Elise S2 ball joints fit and I did see on the Elise forum a couple of years ago mention of a BMW sourced ball joint that will also fit. Subsequent searches by me on the Elise forum have failed to find the detail, and it's no good asking them because they won't bother to reply once they know you've got a VX :-)

For what it's worth

Eric.

I pressed my ball joints out when I had the wishbones powder coated. I replaced one which I got from Eliseparts (Elise S2) and they are the same. The joint is pressed in and therefore you will need to press them out. I used a hydraulic press but you may be able to use a large vice with suitable size bushes. Dont try hammering them out. The under side from memory has a pressed steel cap which is easily damaged. Damage this and you'll need a new joint. In your case dismantling isn't a worry its the fitting when you'll have to be careful.

Ball joints are relatively simple to replace. Easy way of checking them is to jack the car up, but your finger on the point from the rear and get someone to push/pull the wheel, you should be able to feel and movement in the joint. Alternatively it may well be a trackrod end causing the knocking. Mine only happens when the car gets hot. Again, put your hand on the bar and get someone to apply weight to each rear corner of the car and you should be able to hear/feel the clonk.

I have recently fitted a new balljoint, like has been said Eliseparts do them cheap, they appear to be the same on all Elises and VX's. Be warned they are tight and you will need something to press them out, I ended up making a clamp/press thing using threaded bar and flanges. You could borrow it if you were local (up north).
