Quick question - I have done a quick search and got a few tips regarding the removal of a back box but could do with some more! I am travelling to a salvage yard on Saturday where my poor "written off" VX is currently residing to remove the VSE I had on it, could anyone give me any tips for easy removal (stage by stage) as I have never done such an operation before and I am not mechanically minded at all. I have spotted on some threads that I might need to drill the fecking bolts but that aside any info would be much appreciated! I loved the sound of it and want to pop it onto my next VX as soon as the insurance offer is settled! Many thanks in advance.

It shouldn't be a difficult job but sods law says that one or more of the bolts will be a pig to remove.

Ditto. It's not technically difficult but almost certainly the bolts will have rusted on. Be prepared to cut them off :(

Kenbo, removing a VSE is fairly easy, it has advantages and disadvantages over the standard box: Here is a short step by step guide: You need: -8mm spanner, ratchet preferable. -5mm allen key -Philips screw driver -two,13mm spanners -11 mm spanner, ratchet with extension is preferable -Hammer. You may need: -17mm socket and ratchet, with extension. -22 mm spanner. -10mm spanner Remove undertray, ten 8mm bolts, two 5mm allen, two philips scrivits. It slides forward and then back to remove. Always looking from the back the car forward, the best thing to do is undo the bolts on the VSE first while the whole thing is still rigid (ie still connected to the Cat). I have shown these in the attached figure. The blue ones are obviously facing backwards which makes them a pain to get to, but it is possible, and I would recommend a ratchet. The red bolts are easier and should be no problem. The two connecting place that have just been released from the exhaust in the above operation attach to the car via a rubber mount and two 11mm bolts, undo them and remove. Keep the brackets safe they are unique to the VSE. Next undo the three 13mm bolts that connect the cat to the U-bend. These might be tricky, if they are rusted, wd-40 may help. Finally undo the clamp which connects the U-bend to the Vse. And beat it off. The VSE will fit past the cat, so holding the cat up as high as it will go, slide the exhaust forward and it should come out with ease. If you can’t get it out that way you need to remove the downpipe. That requires the removal of the lambda sensors which are 22mm bolts, the loosening of the heat shield around the manifold, removal of the three 17mm nuts, and its off. Tell you what, do you want to take the lambda sensors with you?

Kenbo, the new atached image shows the cat as well as the vse. The dark grey u-bend is the one i mentioned in the above guide and i have shown 2 of the 3 bolts you need to remove between the U-bend and the cat (the funny shapped box) The green items are the lambda sensors. They require a 22mm spanner to undo them, and potentially a bit of wd-40. They have a long wire attached which you need to follow back to the connector. Hopefully that helps thumbsup
