Car's going in for a service tomorrow, and I asked them to change the brake fluid as well. Obviously I could not supply any and they'll use the bog standard Vauxhall stuff, but there must be better stuff than that. I've seen a few references to Castrol SRX - is that the best I'm going to be able to get at short notice (i.e. from Halfords)? Also, how much do I need?

id say super dot 4 do 5.1 is a waste of time unless you are going to bleed it every week and use you car on track every week

Halfords dot5.1 is ideal for fast road/light track use, as is Vauxhalls own stuff

Castrol SRF is a) very expensive, B ) even though its the best you can get, it doesn't seem to be able to cope with our crap brake setup with hard track use

Castrol Response Super DOT 4 has been specifically designed to be a high temperature alternative to DOT 5.1 fluids. Its superior characteristics give added benefit in situations where extreme conditions are encountered and ultimate braking response required. Castrol Response Super DOT 4 is based on glycol ether and borate ester technology and as such has a high vapour lock point (measurement relating to high temperature performance under braking conditions). Because of the nature of this formulation, the vapour lock point can be sustained at a higher level than conventional glycol ether based fluids during the service life of the product . PERFORMANCE SAE J1703 (Current) ISO 4925 FMVSS 116 DOT 3 & DOT 4 JIS K 2233 TYPICAL CHARACTERISTICS Dry Boiling Point ºC 280 Wet Boiling Point ºC ca 190 Viscosity at -40ºC, cSt 1200 Viscosity at 100ºC 2.6 pH 7.2 ap dot 5.1 their 551 fluid Typical’ New Dry Boiling Point - 275°C (527°F) Minimum ‘Wet’ E.R. (Equilibrium Reflux) Boiling Point - 150°C (302°F) as you can see both dry and wet boiling points are higher than 5.1 fluid

Not compared to the amount of road miles I do (around 15,000 per year). A couple of track days a year, give or take.
