We have just aquired a VXR220 for sale at my work (Brindley Vauxhall) So I thought I would give it a blast :D WoW!!! What a car :D But my question is why does it stop so well? I have a VXTurbo with mintex 1144 pads, & drilled discs so much better than standard brembo pads & standard discs. All I can find out is that the VXR has uprated brake pads. On the rear pads I can just make out the word ASBESTOS!! Now am I missing some thing like Asbestos free? but cant quite see the word FREE  Or do they contain Asbestos? What ever they are the stopping power is the best I have ever come across in a VX.

vxR has a better abs unit which probably makes the biggest difference. 16in front wheels are probably helping too. I'd be very suprised if vauxhall used asbestos in their brakes on the basis it has been a banned substance for quite some time.

all of the above thumbsup - 4 channel ABS, 16" front wheels, LSS or ohlins(?) and probably pagids Just took one of the guys out at work - nearly sh*t himself when i came bowling into the first roundabout at mach 5... Afterwards, he is ranting to everyone "oh my god - that is THE fastest, THE best handling, THE best braking car i have ever been in...it shits on my bike!" Sweet He is after a new car - so now thinking of a 2nd car.... could be the 3rd person i have "converted"!! B)

Yep, I too was shocked when I saw "Asbestos" when I had my Speedster fitted with Pagid RS14s – till I looked more closely and saw the "free" bit  :P

James, I am surprised at you. The ABS unit will make no difference until you achieve wheel lock. The stopping power Cragpuss describes is solely the bite and friction of Pagid RS 14's. They really are as good (read superior to all else) as he says.

...and tyres. The biggest factor in the rate at which you can slow down is tyre grip. Having 195 semi slicks at the front compared to 175 bridgestones will make a massive difference to how quickly you can pull up. Better ABS won't make you slow down quicker.

ah yes, i stand corrected.
In terms of braking efficiency different ABS unit would make no difference at all in the discription above and it would all be primairly down to the pads. Then the wider 16s would probably make up the rest of the difference (not because they are wider though, mostly down to the higher side wall, providing better histerisis and stiction. no friction here! ;) )

I suspect though that should he stab the brakes in both cars, he would probably find the vxR more consistent in its ABS triggering.

The use of all types of asbestos for all but a tiny handful of applications was outlawed about seven years ago. As of a few years ago it was completely outlawed. Doesn't make much odds to brake pads but you try getting effective and safe flange jointing materials for steam applications. The perils of allowing people who who fcuk all about fcuk all to be in charge I suppose.

Wasn't steam power banned in the 1950's?

Steam is still kind of handy. You know, power generation, heating and other trivial activities like that. Steam vehicles on the other hand should have been wiped off the face of the earth long ago. Not only are they extremely stupid they are a grade A freak magnet.
