Okay, so I've removed all of the bolts - but the fuel cap surround seems quite happy where it is! Is it glued on as well, it is it just the fact that it's not been moved in five years? Anyone else replaced theirs? Ken

There is a thin cork shim between the filler cap assembly and the bodywork, years of dirt and grime ingress make it tricky to remove, to remove gently pry away from the body using a credit card or similar. Take care not to dislodge the cottage cheese type material behind the body as this can make reassembly quite tricky! Good luck, Craig.

How did you remove the bolts, what do they bolt into, I tried to remove mine but gave up at loosening two of them as they just spin in their holes. so i didnt want to try any more. Dan.

swapped mine for the VXR one a while back. The bolts came out fine.......but the filler surround needed some careful persuasion...I used a very fine flated headed screwdriver wrapped in some cloth and worked my way around very slowly/carefully. I thought it might have been stuck on but as said before it was the gasket stuck to the surround and bodywork. Good luck

Like i said "cottage cheese". Its a peice of very soft plastic. the bad news is, its pretty much ruined if the threads have been stripped. The bolts in the "spinning holes" should just pull out with long nosed pliers. Hope this helps.

Thanks for all the replies chaps! I've done it now, took about 25mins all in all. I knew one end of the cottage cheese bit was knackered, from when I replaced rusty bolts previously, but fortunately its in such a position that I was able to reach around the back and stick a nut onto the bolt. As far as removing the surround, I used my trusty mastercard to slowly pry the surround away, once wedged in, I then increased the wedge by throwing my switch card in there too on top of the mastercard. If you do that and work in circles around the surround it'll soon loosen. No sign of any glue, just years of gunk holding it I guess. Anyhow, I've now got a nice new cap and surround fitted to replace my horridly corroded ones. thumbsup thumbsup thumbsup Ken

Yep, it's just about possible to feel the back of the bolts if you stick your arm thru from the engine bay - long arms a bonus. K

Yep, classic Vaux pricing  , if only I had a lathe

Should only cost about a tenner to anodise your existing one - I still haven't found the time to get mine done tho  and not really possible if it's used as an everyday car
