I had the VXT Milltek full exhaust system fitted the other day by pete @ PVD along with EBC brake discs and greenstuff pads. I took the car out for a long drive yesterday and was absolutely amazed at the difference in performance. The exhaust totally removed the hesitation (lag) I had at around 3,500rpm and revved right up to the limit in no time at all. The stopping power is also transformed. I have had no re-map and I don't believe that it is needed. On the way back a flat nosed 911 turbo wanted to show me how quick he was, it was'nt that long before he decided that he had bitten off more than he could chew!!!! In my opinion for the sum total of just short of £1500 fitted, Its the only thing you need to transform the VXT from a very fast car to something that is super-sonic. Signing off a very happy man :D :D :D :D Nigel P

They were the top two mods on my list of things to do. Good to hear that you recon it's worth it. What was the bottom line price you paid for the bits and fitting ? Did you try and haggle a discount ? Did PVD do the fitting in their own bays ? BTW - flat-nose 911's are fine, don't try it with the 993 type 911's - the 4WD bi-turbo ones. They will only laugh and say good-bye (I know, I had one for 18 months that had a 'Mild' tune at 550BHP/550 ft/lbs !). By far the most superb vehicle I've ever had the pleasure to come near - bar none !

The total cost was £1475. The exhaust was fitted for free (£130-£150 @ AMD) and the discs & pads were £100 for fitting. The fitting was done by Ian at M-Tek (BMW specialist) round the corner from PVD. It was the 1st time he had worked on a VXT, but he did an excellent job and is a really nice person. This was a deal negotiated with Pete @ PVD. PS. And how much was the 933? rally

rally

yeh!

But I would love one.

I am so desperate to attain the full potential of this car, and your mods are high on my dream list. Don't ask me why, but for me the priorities are:

1. Kicking Brakes.
2. Awesome Supension.
3. Reliable Power and Noise.
4,5,6,7,8, etc etc etc!

And on top of all that I want a car that I can lap the ring in quicker than I can do it on my bike. ie less than 8 mins. (To keep up with Ricky next year!)

I paid about £40k for my N plate 993 bi-turbo. Servicing at a specialist is once every 12k miles/12 months (£500ish), extra oil changes are £120ish (2 gallons of mobil 1 !) had it for 18months, put 25k miles on it and sold it to the dealer I bought it from for £125 less than I paid for it. Insurance was £650 Fully Comp, reliability was bullet-proof and performance than would destroy an R1 bike (I had a 996SPS Ducati at the same time, and it would leave it for dead .. in a straight line !!), but my wife could drive it with 2 kids in the back. Why did I get rid.. I often ask myself the same question. It was just time for a change, something different. But never a day goes by without me wanting another one ! :(

Going slightly off the original topic now, but couldn't resist asking someone who's owned a 911 and a VX...

A lot of Porsche afficionados rate the rear-drive only models more for responsiveness and purer handling.

I was able to climb from my Speedster into a new 996GT3 at Hockenheim and of course it has more grunt, but I still found this "enthusiasts 911" to be ponderous compared to the Speedster in its whole feel. In direct comparison it felt solid but cumbersome – reminded me of my old Range Rover 4.6 Vogue actually! :D

Would you not agree that the steering delicacy of the VX tops the 911?

That's the point that most Porsche owners try to make.. the 996 is too soft. Far easier to go fast in, and tamed a bit more for the average wealthy city-slicker to do the odd track day in - not the enthusiasts 911 at all. The 993, it's predecessor, was a different proposition totally - brutal without the dangerousness of the older 964 type 2WD models. It was the last of the air-cooled for a start - far more of a "enthusiasts 911" than the new 996 range IMHO (and lots of other Porche owners). That's the main reason that the 993 Bi-turbo looses so little money when people still want it as the most exhilarating porsche of recent years.

I haven't tried a modded VXT, but hopefully will do so very soon ;) but the two cars go for a different market sector totally and you gets what you pays for, and the porsche is in a different league. I'd sum it up by saying it's a supercar version of a Subaru Impreza (they both even have boxer engines). Definitely an all-time great.

Hunt one out in a Porsche dealer, get a decent test-drive and get ready to put down a deposit, you can't resist it. Then spend £2.5k on an extra oil-cooler, new intercooler and Rolling Road tune and play with 550ft/Lbs of torque on a greasy road.... sh*t, I'm going to go and buy another !!

The steering of the VX is more "delicate" as you put it.. but I get more of a kick out of scaring myself silly.. getting out of the car with my hands shaking sort of stuff rather than anything else. You are guaranteed this with an engine hanging out over the back wheels :)

My VXT will be at 270bhp/300lbs as soon as I can save up the cash - bollocks to the gearbox, life is too short (both mine and the gearbox probably !), and I recon I'll have something to scare me silly again !! Just need to address the cooling issues first .........

Mmmm...

whatever turns you on!

I've tried a friend's Carrera 2 – did nothing for me I'm afraid. Never tried the Carrera 4, but all reports I've read or heard say more boring. Did consider a 996 4S as it would be a good package for all year round use out here in Switzerland but again, was able to compare one with the Speedster at Hockenheim and they don't convince me – in a way I wish they could, as it would be a very practical, low depreciation choice. Also, styling is still based on a squashed VW Beetle too :( :( :( and my wife vehemently rejects one on that basis alone :D

Personally I prefer a car that's on my side in an emergency – the old 911's are more likely to have you off througfh the hedge backwards (or worse :( ). Prefer harmony with the car to fighting an inherent design defect such as engine hung out the back. A good mid-engined set-up is far driver-friendlier for far longer.

You may laugh but, using the pretty realistic physics engine of Gran Turismo 3 on the Playstation 2 allows one to test various supercars with impunity, and I have to say it's mid-engined for me every time. Favourites include Ford GT40 and Pagani Zonda – they are in essence über-Speedsters! :D In comparison, using the pendulum weight of the @rse-heavy 911 to set yourself up for corners only works as long as you know the road – as soon as you're on unfamiliar territory, you can get it horribly wrong and that's the "car not being on your side" aspect that I hate. For those who like sweaty palms and climbing out shaking that's fine – personally I had enough of frightening myself in driver-unfriendly cars as a 17 year-old in my mum's Vauxhall Viva :P Not that I'm saying a 911 is like a Viva  – it's just not right for me – but then they do say everyone should own a 911 at some time... maybe as a sensible addition to the Speedster sometime – afterall, an old Speedster is not worth selling – you get b*gger-all for them anyway!

Please don't post this on a Porsche site – don't think they could handle it!

Laugh.. must confess I did a bit. Thought I was in for a decent discussion for a bit there.

All I can say is that you go and try to get behind the wheel of some of these cars (and I don't mean the Logitech one attached to your PS2) and make your own mind up. I've lived with some brutal cars over the years (TVR Cerbera 4.5) and some sublime ones (Lotus Esprit V8 GT). After all this time, the only one that stands out as something obviously special is the 911 (type 993) turbo 4. That's my own opinion, and being in a 4 way dice with a Zonda, a Ferrari Enzo and a Diablo round the virtual streets of New York isn't really going to change my mind .

.. Vauxhall Viva Magnum, now there was a car !
