I have just fitted an induction kit to the VXT. Is there any way I can reduce the amount of noise it makes, specifically the turbo wastegate wooshing like an industrial steam iron. I wouldn't mind it, if it was a low mileage car that I took out on the occasional blast and track day, however, having done 15000 miles in 9 months I do not like the Renault 5 GT Turbo style noises that eminate from the air intake. So, can anyone suggest a way of reducing the noise without restricting the directness of the airflow (if this is physically possible, because I suppose one compromises the other). cheers

Yeah, swap cars with me. It doesn't have one of those pesky noisy turbos on it... Seriously, I'm not sure if you could... Maybe change the induction kit for a panel filter in the standard housing... Or get a louder exhaust that'll pop-n-bang ™ so much that you can't hear the wastegate chatter. It might be that you get used to it TBH. Give it a couple of weeks.

I tried the BMC carbon dynamics airbox in mine (same as Ricky's) but took it back off for much the same reason. It sounded great on the 2.2, but the wastegate noise on the VXT makes it sounds like a Max Power RS Turbo  I've deristricted the standard airbox and fitted a Courtenay panel filter now (£30 if you do it yourself). The performance and induction noise are as good as with the induction kit, but the wastegate whoosing is more bearable now.

In a couple of weeks, In a couple of weeks. In a couple of weeks is how long the Americans thought the war would end in Iraq.... In a couple of weeks the amount of earbashing I will receive by the missus will cause more damage to my hearing than the farting from the induction noise. Give me a burbling aftermark exhaust noise any time, however farting and locomotive noises down my earhole is not something I want. If someone can't suggest anything, I will probably have to take it off. Pity though, the extra breathing has made the car very responsive and reduced the pickup significantly. cheers

I like your suggestion, however, I don't understand how a panel filter can provide similar benefits to the performance when the air pipe on the induction kit is placed into the direct firing line in the side air intake (forcing cold air into the filter).

Just a query, not questioning your judgement.

cheers

Most engines suck air. The ram effect from induction kits is mostly marketing IMO. The standard airbox has 2 plastic restrictors, reducing airflow and more improtantly, drive-by noise. Removing these is easy and as well as allowing more air through, it staightens the path for the air flow too. The same mod on my 2.2 gave a huge benefit in the mid-range. Admittedly, my opinion of the effect is subjective, but I'm happy that this mod will cope with standard and mild remaps (St 1 & 2). It might become restrictive with the full monty (Sprint or Regal mods) but by then, wastegate noise will be the least of your worries :)

Wrap the outside of the induction filter and cloth duct with asbestos tape. Most of the noise eminates through the thin housing. Steve

The panel filter will be a little bit less restrictive than the paper element. Its the deresricting the airbox that helps power.

You probably mean glassfibre tape. However, if you know of a source for asbestos tape please let me know. We can't get the stuff for love nor money.
