Please please can someone tell me how to do an oil change on my vx 2.2. Yes i have searched the forums but have not found a simple solution. I need to know 1/ How much oil do i need? 2/ Is it just a matter of taking out the oil sump bung/bolt draining the oil and topping up with mobil 1? 3/ I have 45000 miles on the car and it has been regularly (badly) serviced at a so called Vauxhall Main Dealer. Do i need a new oil filter at this mileage. I'm assuming it has been changed as per service instructons! but who knows. Is the filter hard to get at if so? Thanks in advance Stevie

From memory you need 6 litres, perhaps a little more. Yes it is as simple as taking the sump plug out and replacing. Yes you should change the filter at the same time too, it is only about £3.50 from Halfords. The filter isn't too difficult to get to really, disconnecting the airbox tubing makes it easier (or indeed possible) to get to.

Is it not 4.75ltr's to fill it up as there was a misprint in the service book? I'm sure there is a bulletin in TIS about it.

depending on the age of the car you might have to take the under tray off to get to the sump ( I know i have to on my very very early one) its a 15mm bolt for the sump, get this off and drain the oil (pref while a little warm) once well drained clean up the bung and refit, its got a dowty washer type thing so no real need to replace it. ive found the easiest wway to get the oil filter off is as follows. Get a halfords ratchet spanner kit (or just the 19mm + 1/2" square drive adaptor), pop the 1/2" into the square ontop of the filter. undo and with lots of rag about, remove the filter, unclip the top part and pop on the new filter (i like to cover the new one in new oil), then refit it all in reverse of removal. fill with oil (15W-40 gm semi synth as a minimum grade) I get GM filters now as they are only about £1 more than halfords... marginal peace of mind. If the filter hasnt been changed in a long while (over a year) then personally I'd change it every few K or 6-8 weeks for a bit then do another change 6 months down the line and then onto annual/milage related servicing again. I tend to slap in 5 Litres and run it for a day or two. I have noticed however that if the car ahs been stood ovenight that the oil level is WAY up the dipstick. but when its warm and stood for 10-15mins the oil level is perfect... is this normal?

Hi, I've found that a 5 litre container of synthetic is ample. Undo the filter housing using a 1/2" square long extension into the square hole on top of the filter housing. Over-filling is detrimental to any engine - it not be over the max when stationary and cold, or excessive crank-case pressure can build up. Keep it between the markers (hot and cold) or expect trouble! Steve

I think ill be pulling some fluid out of mine then..... stupid service manual. ill check to see what the astra 2.2 manual says (although we'd need a touch more for the oil cooler)

I'm sure it's 5 for the N/A and 4.5 for the Turbo. Look in the manual!!! And you should always change the filter with the oil. IIRC I found it a PITA to get the cover off the oil filter housing on the N/A. Having said that the Turbo is awkwerd to get at underneath.

I need to do mine soon. The position of the sump drain in relation to the undertrays is a right pain (2.2). I got away with taking the rear undertray off, taking the first few bolts off of the main one so it would pull down slightly and constructed a fantastic funnel arrangement with an old oil carton  Probably just quicker taking the whole bloody thing off.

Thats kinda like what i made too - except its a old 2ltre milk carton used as a catch tray, then it runs down an old 5litre fuel can hose into a oil catch contianer. Saves loads of time not having to whip the try off.

BTW I was told the NA has 5.2 litres of oil in it, it's what i put in anyway thumbsup

Thats probably for the Z22SE engine as in the astra/whatever other car its in. The VX220 one has an oil cooler (which i think the others don't) - so thats probably where the extra oil goes.

Is it just me that has a devil of a job getting the oil filter cap back on? Its a right pain to seat back down, and unless i torque it down far more than the 25Nm suggested it leaks :(

btw. the TIS system tells you to buy new metal gaskets whenever you replace the filter. They're only a few quid, so its probably worth doing. However no garage or owner i've spoken to seems to bother!
